Research in Science, Arts, and Creation
The RESSAC Festival (Research in Science, Arts, and Creation) is a multidisciplinary event organized by the University of Bretagne Occidentale in Brest. Since 2022, this free festival explores the links between arts and sciences through concerts, exhibitions, dance, theater, and workshops. A laboratory for inclusive culture, RESSAC invites students, researchers, artists, and the general public to share hybrid creative experiences and discover research in a different way, with a spirit of curiosity and exchange.
Created in 2022 by the University of Bretagne Occidentale (UBO), the RESSAC Festival is a unique cultural event that bridges scientific research and artistic creation. Its name, an acronym for Research in Science, Arts, and Creation, also evokes the movement of the sea, anchoring this festival in Brest's maritime identity.
Each year, RESSAC unfolds over five days on the university campuses and in Brest's cultural venues, notably the Ateliers des Capucins. The program, entirely free, offers around forty events: concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances, radio creations, participatory workshops, film screenings, immersive installations, and conferences. Each edition is structured around thematic paths exploring contemporary issues.
The RESSAC Festival defines itself as a "laboratory for inclusive and accessible culture." It brings together students, teacher-researchers, artists, and the general public in collective creation projects, breaking down the boundaries between academic disciplines and artistic practices. The hybrid and eclectic cultural offerings highlight local research while opening it up to new forms of expression.
Each edition of RESSAC explores a unifying theme. In 2024, the theme of "The Molt" allowed for the exploration of biological, climatic, and social transformations. For 2026, the thematic paths include post-oil, digital data, mathematics, and reproductive health, demonstrating the festival's ambition to cross-reference fundamental research and societal questions within a creative framework.
Since its first edition in 2022, RESSAC has continuously developed, growing from a university event to a major cultural gathering in the Brest metropolitan area. The 4th edition, scheduled for March 2026, confirms this momentum with an expanded call for projects and a strengthened ambition for regional outreach.
The 4th edition of the RESSAC Festival will be held from March 10 to 14, 2026, in Brest. The festival will offer thematic paths around post-oil, digital data, mathematics, and reproductive health.
The RESSAC Festival returns from March 10 to 14, 2026, for its 4th edition. Thematic paths will explore post-oil, digital data, mathematics, and reproductive health, with special evenings including the "Machin Machine Night."
The call for projects has been launched with a deadline of February 24, 2025, inviting artists and researchers to propose hybrid creations blending arts and sciences.
The festival takes place on the UBO campuses in Brest and in various cultural venues in the city, notably the Ateliers des Capucins. The detailed program with the precise locations of each event is available on the festival's website.
Brest's campuses and cultural venues are accessible via the Bibus bus and tram network.
