International festival of world dances, songs, and music in Saint-Girons
The RITE Festival (Rencontres Internationales de Traditions et d'Expressions) is an international festival of world dances, songs, and music organized annually in August in Saint-Girons, Ariège. Created in 1991, it has celebrated cultural diversity for over 30 years by hosting folk troupes from 7 to 8 different countries, bringing together over 250 artists—musicians, singers, and dancers—for 10 days of cultural exchange, concerts, parades, and workshops. The grand show "World Cultures" at the Parc des Expositions is the highlight of this free event, open to all.
Created in 1991, the RITE Festival is one of the oldest music and dance festivals in Ariège. Born from a desire to promote international cultural exchange in Couserans, it has hosted hundreds of troupes from five continents over the years. The festival is organized by the association L'Estive - Association Bethmalaise, rooted in the Bethmale valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in Couserans, famous for its cheese and traditional clogs.
Each edition of the RITE Festival brings together 250 artists—musicians, singers, and dancers—from 7 to 8 different countries. The troupes, in traditional costumes, present authentic performances showcasing the musical and choreographic heritage of their home countries. Over the years, audiences have discovered the traditions of Nepal, Bolivia, Romania, Chile, Bulgaria, Malawi, Cape Verde, Cuba, Colombia, and many others.
The RITE Festival spans 10 days, from late July to early August. The program includes an inaugural exhibition, free concerts in the villages of Couserans, dance and music workshops, parades through the streets of Saint-Girons, and themed evenings. The grand show "World Cultures", at the Parc des Expositions in Saint-Girons, is the festival's climax: 250 artists perform on a grand stage in a magically colorful and rhythmic spectacle. The Fiesta Latina, another highlight, offers an evening dedicated to Latin American music and dances.
The RITE Festival is much more than just an artistic event. It is a true bridge between world cultures and the Couserans region. For 10 days, international artists live in the heart of the Pyrenean villages, share meals with locals, and discover local traditions. These human exchanges, beyond the performances, are the richness and originality of the festival. The event actively contributes to the cultural influence of Saint-Girons and Ariège, attracting thousands of visitors to this preserved Pyrenean valley.
The 28th edition of the RITE Festival is confirmed for summer 2026 in Saint-Girons. The festival will host international troupes of world music and dances for 10 days of shows, parades, and workshops. Dates and program to be confirmed.
