The summer festival of Croix, the French commune furthest from the sea
The Fête de Croix celebrates each summer this unique village in the South-Territoire de Belfort, recognized as the French commune furthest from the sea. Perched at about 570 meters above sea level on a Jura plateau, this village of 166 inhabitants organizes its annual festival against a backdrop of majestic landscapes, on the border of Switzerland and the Doubs department, in a friendly and authentic village atmosphere.
The village of Croix (90100) is an exceptional commune in the Territoire de Belfort, with a geographical peculiarity that gives it national renown: it is recognized as the French commune furthest from the sea. Located at the southern tip of the department, bordering Switzerland (to the east) and the Doubs department (to the south), Croix extends over a Jura plateau at about 570 meters above sea level.
The history of Croix is intimately linked to an hagiographic legend. According to local tradition, Saints Dizier and Regenfroi were martyred around 675 on the site where the village developed. Legend has it that Dizier had just planted a cross-shaped stick and begun to pray when brigands attacked him. This story gave the village its name — Croix — and gives it a special spiritual dimension.
In the center of the village, two beam wells (balance beam wells) have been preserved, testifying to the rural heritage and ingenuity of the former inhabitants of the Jura plateau. These heritage elements contribute to the authentic charm of Croix and its tourist appeal.
Each summer, the 166 inhabitants of Croix and their neighbors gather for the annual municipal festival. Organized by the festival committee under the auspices of Mayor Claude Monnier, this celebration brings the community together in a friendly atmosphere typical of rural village festivals.
The remoteness from the sea and the particular geographical location of Croix create a strong sense of community belonging: the inhabitants of this isolated village cultivate close social ties, and the annual festival is the most visible expression of this. The Communauté de Communes Sud-Territoire supports these local initiatives that maintain life in the rural villages of the department.
The plateau on which the village of Croix is perched offers remarkable panoramas of the Jura landscapes. At 570 meters above sea level, the village enjoys pleasant coolness in summer, making the summer festival particularly enjoyable. The surrounding forests and preserved meadows contribute to the exceptional natural setting that characterizes this very special commune in the Territoire de Belfort.
The 2026 Fête de Croix will bring together the inhabitants of this Jura village in the Territoire de Belfort for family activities, pétanque, and a festive evening on the plateau at 570 meters above sea level.
The Fête de Croix 2026 will be held in July in this unique village, the French commune furthest from the sea. Activities for children, pétanque, refreshments, and a festive evening are on the program in this preserved Jura setting. Detailed program to come.
