Every June 21, Calais celebrates the Fête de la Musique: amateur musicians, local bands, and guest artists perform for free in the streets, squares, cafe terraces, and cultural venues of the city. On the Opal Coast, the day is entirely free and open to everyone, from the youngest to the oldest.
The Fête de la Musique in Calais
As everywhere in France since 1982, the Fête de la Musique transforms the city of Calais into an open-air stage every June 21. Music freely takes over public spaces, from the city center to the port area, in all genres and for all audiences: rock, rap, chanson, jazz, classical music, electro, and world music coexist for an evening.
A celebration throughout the city
Usually, several open-air stages are set up in the streets and squares of the center, while bars and restaurants take part in the celebration by scheduling concerts on their terraces or inside their establishments. Local bands and amateur practices hold a prominent place, alongside guest artists.
