The Fête de la Saint-Vincent is one of the most important traditions in the Sancerre wine calendar. Every year, at the end of January, winemakers from Sancerre and surrounding villages gather to celebrate Saint Vincent, their patron saint, in an atmosphere that is both solemn and festive.

Saint Vincent, patron of winemakers

Saint Vincent has been revered as the protector of winemakers since the Middle Ages. His feast day, celebrated on January 22nd, traditionally marks the end of the wine winter and heralds the renewal of the vine cycle. Throughout the vineyards of France, winemakers honor their patron saint, and Sancerre proudly upholds this beautiful tradition.

A celebration in several stages

Solemn mass

The day begins with a mass celebrated in one of the churches of the Sancerrois (the location changes each year to allow all wine-producing villages to host the event). Winemakers in ceremonial attire attend, accompanied by their families and residents.

Festivities

After the religious service, the festivities continue:

  • Vin d'honneur: tasting of new wines
  • Parade: procession of brotherhoods and winemakers
  • Banquet: convivial meal bringing together the profession
  • Entertainment: music, winemaking songs

2026: A special year

In 2026, Saint-Vincent holds special significance as the year marks the 90th anniversary of the Sancerre AOC, recognized in 1936. This double celebration promises to be exceptional.

A living tradition

Beyond the religious aspect, Saint-Vincent is a moment of communion among winemakers, an opportunity to celebrate their craft, their terroir, and to pass on winegrowing values and traditions to younger generations.
