The oldest traditional festival in Tarentaise, every August 15th in Peisey-Nancroix
The Fête du Costume et de la Montagne is an exceptional heritage celebration held every August 15th in Peisey-Nancroix, in Tarentaise. Since 1948, the village comes alive for a day dedicated to its mountain traditions: parade in traditional Savoyard costumes with the famous embroidered gold "frontière" headdress, float parade, folk dances, artisan market, and fireworks. This festival, one of the oldest in Savoie, brings together locals and vacationers around a living and moving cultural heritage.
The Fête du Costume et de la Montagne is one of the oldest traditional festivals in Savoie. Since 1948, every August 15th, the Assumption Day and Sainte-Marie's feast day, the village of Peisey-Nancroix adorns itself in its finest attire for a day celebrating its mountain heritage. What began as a village festival has become over the decades a recognized heritage event, attracting visitors from all over Savoie and beyond.
The highlight of the festival is the parade in traditional costumes through the village streets. Women wear the famous "frontière", a headdress adorned with gold trim, accompanied by the embroidered shawl, ceremonial pieces that once reflected the social status of those who wore them. Men don the traditional attire of Tarentaise. Each costume is a living testament to mountain textile know-how, passed down and maintained with passion from generation to generation.
The float parade, reenactments of past mountain life scenes, winds through the village streets to applause. Savoyard folk groups liven up the day with traditional dances and songs. The morning mass, followed by a procession in costume, opens the festivities in the village of Peisey, before the afternoon continues in Rosuel.
In the afternoon, an artisan and craft market takes place in Rosuel, showcasing traditional mountain crafts: wood carving, blacksmithing, weaving, cheese making. Visitors discover demonstrations of ancient crafts and can purchase local artisanal products. This educational aspect makes the festival a true living museum of Tarentaise mountain culture.
The day extends into the evening with a live concert and a popular ball, before concluding with fireworks that illuminate the surrounding mountains. This moment of shared celebration between locals and vacationers embodies the mountain conviviality that has characterized Peisey-Nancroix for over 75 years.
The 76th edition of the Fête du Costume et de la Montagne will be held on August 15, 2026, in Peisey-Nancroix, continuing the Savoyard traditions of Tarentaise.
