The classical music academy-festival that makes the peaks of Tignes vibrate every summer
MusicAlp is an international classical music academy and concert festival held every summer in Tignes, at an altitude of 2,100 meters. Founded in 1999 in Courchevel and then established in Tignes since 2013, this institution brings together the greatest teachers and performers of world classical music for two weeks — pianists, violinists, violists, clarinetists — for intensive masterclasses and chamber music concerts open to the public. The Tignespace auditorium hosts a dozen free or low-cost concerts, offering an exceptional classical program in a unique alpine setting.
MusicAlp was born in 1999 at the initiative of passionate musicians eager to create a place of excellence for the transmission and practice of classical music in the mountains. Initially based in Courchevel, the academy moved to Tignes in 2013, finding in the Savoyard resort an ideal natural setting for concentration, inspiration, and musical encounters. A non-profit association (law 1901), MusicAlp has been pursuing its mission of promoting classical music through high-level educational and cultural activities for over twenty-five years.
Each summer, the academy welcomes students from around the world — pianists, violinists, violists, cellists, clarinetists, and chamber musicians — for two-week intensive sessions. The courses are taught by internationally renowned professors, educators, and performers recognized on the world's greatest stages. The altitude of 2,100 meters, the summer coolness, and the magnificent panoramas of the Vanoise National Park provide a conducive environment for in-depth musical work and rich human exchanges.
The festival aspect of MusicAlp is one of the event's unique features. The Tignespace auditorium, the resort's modern performance hall, hosts a dozen chamber music concerts during the two weeks of the academy. These concerts, given by the professor-performers and the best students, offer a repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary, with a preference for chamber music works — sonatas, trios, quartets, quintets.
Special musical events enrich the program: themed evenings combining humor and music, poetry and piano, jazz and classical, artist meet-and-greets, and open-air concerts. The intimate atmosphere of these musical gatherings, where the audience is in close proximity to exceptional performers, is one of MusicAlp's unique charms.
What makes MusicAlp exceptional is the symbiosis between training and performance. Students benefit from individual and group masterclasses, interpretation classes, and chamber music sessions, while also having the opportunity to perform in concert before a diverse audience — discerning music lovers, curious vacationers, families. This openness to the public enriches the experience of young musicians and allows listeners to discover classical music in an informal and warm setting.
After more than a quarter of a century, MusicAlp has established itself as one of Europe's most renowned chamber music academies, a place where artistic standards dialogue with the beauty of the alpine landscape, and where music truly reaches new heights.
