The celebration of July 14th in Sens: fireworks on the banks of the Yonne, popular ball and concert on the Place de la République
Every year on July 14th, the town of Sens (89100), prefecture of the Yonne department and capital of the Sénonais region, celebrates the National Holiday with an ambitious festive program that brings together residents and visitors in an atmosphere of popular joy. From afternoon activities to midnight fireworks, the town offers a full day and evening of free entertainment in its most beautiful public spaces.
From 3 PM, the Place de la République — the symbolic heart of Sens' civic life — hosts a program of family-friendly and convivial activities. Games, stands, and activities are offered to residents and visitors until 6 PM, in a relaxed and festive atmosphere that heralds the evening's grand festivities. This part of the event is particularly appreciated by families with children, who find an ideal setting here to start their July 14th evening.
At 6:30 PM, the republican reception is held on the Place de la République. This is an opportunity for elected officials, residents, and visitors to share a drink in the spirit of republican gathering that characterizes the National Holiday. Then, the orchestra takes over the square to animate a popular ball open to all. With a repertoire that mixes French songs, disco music, and pop hits, the dance evening brings together all generations in good spirits. This ball, accessible to everyone and entirely free, is one of the most appreciated moments by the people of Sens.
The highlight of the evening remains the grand fireworks display, fired at 11 PM from the banks of the Yonne, at the level of Quai Ernest Landry and Quai Jean Moulin. This pyrotechnic show illuminates the sky of Sens and reflects in the waters of the Yonne, offering a spectacle of rare beauty. Thousands of Sens residents and visitors gather each year on the quays and in the surrounding streets to witness this key moment, a luminous symbol of the National Holiday.
An ideal setting for a national holiday, Sens is a city of art and history whose Saint-Étienne Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic art built from the 12th century onwards, majestically overlooks the Place de la République. The banks of the Yonne, with their terraces and shaded promenades, offer a quality public space ideal for summer festivities. The city also has a rich commercial and cultural life, with the Foire de Sens — one of the largest open-air fairs in France — held annually around May 1st.
