Patronal festival and festival of the Geaune Taurin Club, a Tursan village passionate about Landaise racing
A medieval bastide in Tursan founded in the 13th century, Geaune celebrates its patronal festival in early July and its Taurin Club Festival in October, two events that reflect the passion for Landaise racing in this village in the Landes region. The Geaune bullring hosts formal Landaise races counting towards the Challenge Landes-Béarn and the Boléro d'Argent, with the presentation of the cuadrilla. Bands, outdoor meals, popular dances, and traditional games complete these festivities rooted in the Tursan identity.
The historic capital of Tursan, Geaune is a medieval bastide founded in 1318 that has retained its characteristic arcaded square and checkerboard layout. This charming village, nestled between the Chalosse hills and the Tursan vineyards, is also one of the main centers for Landaise racing in the Landes region. The Amis de la Course Landaise, a dynamic taurine club, passionately and skillfully keeps this tradition alive.
The Geaune bullring hosts high-level Landaise races during the patronal festival in July and the Taurin Club Festival in October. These formal races, organized in collaboration with the French Federation of Landaise Racing, count towards the Challenge Landes-Béarn and the prestigious Boléro d'Argent. The best 'écarteurs' (dodgers) and 'sauteurs' (jumpers) of the season perform here, facing the racing cows of renowned breeders like Laurent Deyris. The presentation of the cuadrilla for the following season is a highlight of the October Taurin Club Festival.
Held annually in October, the Taurin Club Festival brings together Landaise racing enthusiasts for a comprehensive program. A friendly meal is served at noon (Geaune salad, duck breast with mushroom sauce, dessert, wine, and coffee), followed at 3:30 PM by a formal Landaise race counting for the Boléro d'Argent. This event also provides an opportunity to present the new cuadrillas for the upcoming season, in an atmosphere of shared passion among aficionados.
Geaune's patronal festival, held in early July, offers a festive program that combines taurine tradition and village conviviality. A Landaise race counting for the Challenge Landes-Béarn is scheduled for Sunday at 5 PM. The streets of the bastide come alive to the rhythm of the 'bandas', the brass bands of the Southwest that are the soul of Landes festivals. Popular dances keep the revelers dancing in the evenings, while the days are marked by traditional games and entertainment for the whole family.
The Fêtes de Geaune are an opportunity to celebrate the gastronomic riches of Tursan. Tursan wine, a recognized local appellation, accompanies outdoor meals featuring duck breast, Geaune salad, and 'pastis landais'. 'Tourtière', a traditional Southwest pastry with apples, and 'croustade' complete a gastronomic panorama that honors the Tursan terroir.
The Patronal Festival takes place early July (Friday to Sunday), with the Landaise race on Sunday at 5 PM counting for the Challenge Landes-Béarn. The Taurin Club Festival is held in mid-October (a Sunday), with a meal at 12 PM and a formal Landaise race at 3:30 PM. Popular dances liven up the evenings of the patronal festival. The detailed program is provided by the Taurin Club.
