The Brewers' City Celebrates Its Beer

Schiltigheim, a town bordering Strasbourg, proudly bears the nickname "Cité des Brasseurs". Since the 19th century, the biggest names in French brewing — Fischer, Adelshoffen, Schutzenberger, Kronenbourg — have written the finest chapters of Alsatian brewing history here. It is in this cradle of beer that the Beer Festival was born in the early 1980s, becoming over the decades one of the most popular festive events in the Strasbourg metropolitan area.

Four Days of Festivities on Place Alfred Muller

Every year, from Friday to Monday of the first weekend in August, Place Alfred Muller (formerly Place de l'Hôtel de Ville) transforms into a huge open-air beer garden. Under festive marquees, visitors taste the products of about half a dozen Alsatian breweries: Storig, Licorne, Meteor, Kronenbourg, Fischer, Perle, and Bendorf. About twenty different beers are offered in a collector's dated glass, which has become a collector's item.

Concerts, Entertainment, and Traditions

The musical program is at the heart of the festival, with live concerts every evening and lively karaoke sessions. Thrill-seekers compete in the traditional barrel-lifting competition, an emblematic test of strength for the event. Folkloric entertainment, traditional Alsatian food (choucroute, flammekueche, pretzels), and game stands complete the program.

The Johrmärik: A Popular Street Market

On the last day, the festival extends into the streets of Schiltigheim with the Johrmärik, a large street market and flea market that transforms the town into a huge, friendly flea market. This more family-oriented day brings together locals and visitors in a good-natured atmosphere, extending the festivities into the evening.

A Community-Driven Event

The Beer Festival is a fantastic community effort: over 800 volunteers from local associations participate in its organization, making this event a true link between the residents of Schiltigheim and visitors from all over Alsace and beyond.
