The festival of the Ventoux village terroir around the Long Black Fig of Caromb, a unique local product
Every July 13th, the village of Caromb, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, celebrates its emblematic fig, the Long Black Fig, a rare and flavorful local variety. Organized by the Confrérie de la Figue Longue Noire de Caromb, this festive and free day offers a producers' market, tastings, entertainment, shows, and the induction of new members with joy and conviviality. An authentic terroir festival in one of the most beautiful villages in the Vaucluse.
Nestled at the foot of the southern slope of Mont Ventoux, about ten kilometers from Carpentras, the village of Caromb (84330) is the guardian of a rare agricultural treasure: the Long Black Fig of Caromb. This local fig variety (Ficus carica) is distinguished by its characteristic elongated shape, its intense purplish-black skin, and its sweet and fragrant purplish-red flesh, which rivals the best figs in the Mediterranean. Cultivated for generations in the gardens and orchards of Caromb and its surroundings, this variety is closely linked to the history and identity of the village.
Since antiquity, the fig has been a foundational fruit of Mediterranean culture, present in Greek and Roman texts, the Bible, and the Quran. Throughout Provence, the fig tree is the quintessential garden tree, serving as both a fruit producer, a shade provider, and a symbol of abundance. In Caromb, this special relationship between the village and its fig trees has transformed over the decades into a true terroir identity, championed and celebrated by the Confrérie de la Figue Longue Noire.
The Confrérie de la Figue Longue Noire de Caromb is the soul of the Fête de la Figue. Founded to preserve, promote, and celebrate the local fig variety, this brotherhood brings together producers, enthusiasts, and friends of the fig in a spirit of conviviality and sharing characteristic of Provençal gastronomic brotherhoods. Its members, dressed in their distinctive costumes during official ceremonies, perpetuate the rituals of induction and promotion of their favorite product with a blend of seriousness and good-natured humor.
The brotherhood plays an essential role in safeguarding the varietal diversity of the Provençal fig tree. By selecting, propagating, and distributing authentic Long Black Fig plants, it helps prevent the disappearance of this local variety in the face of pressure from standardized commercial varieties. This work of genetic and cultural preservation is all the more valuable as many regional fig varieties have already disappeared in France in recent decades.
The Fête de la Figue is held annually on July 13th, the day before July 14th, giving it a doubly festive atmosphere. The choice of this date is not insignificant: July is the month of the first fig harvest (the "figue-fleur" or summer fig), the earliest ones, which herald the main autumn season. The Long Black variety trees are harvested from mid-July for this exceptional first crop.
The day is organized around the producers' market, which brings together fig growers from Caromb and neighboring villages, as well as other producers from the Vaucluse terroir: market gardeners, olive growers (Rhône Valley olive oil), beekeepers (lavender and garrigue honey), winegrowers (Ventoux AOC wines), cheesemakers, and jam makers. Visitors can taste, buy, and discuss directly with the producers, in the spirit of short supply chains and the valorization of local terroir.
The free fig tasting is the moment most anticipated by visitors. Platters of ripe Long Black Figs from Caromb are offered to the public, allowing them to discover the full gustatory richness of this local variety. Culinary preparations based on figs are also offered: homemade fig jam, dried figs, figs with honey, fig tapenade, goat cheese with figs. Local chefs sometimes offer cooking demonstrations featuring figs.
Entertainment and shows liven up the day: Provençal music, traditional dances, children's games, street entertainment. The induction ceremony of new members of the Confrérie de la Figue Longue Noire is one of the day's highlights, blending the solemnity of the ritual with Provençal good humor. The new brethren, chosen for their attachment to the fig and the Caromb terroir, take an oath to promote and defend the Long Black Fig of Caromb.
The Fête de la Figue is also an opportunity to discover the village of Caromb itself, one of the most charming at the foot of the Ventoux. Its medieval old town, its shaded alleys, its 13th-century bell tower, its fountains, and its leisure lake make it a pleasant destination on a summer day. The village is surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, and orchards that bear witness to the agricultural richness of this windy foothills region, located between the Comtat Venaissin plain and the wooded slopes of the Giant of Provence.
