About Fête du Thon

The Fête du Thon of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a popular tradition that has celebrated the history of tuna fishing for over fifty years, deeply rooted in the identity of the Luzien port. Every second Saturday in July, the port, Place Foch, and Place Louis XIV come alive from morning until the end of the night with a program combining gastronomy, music, and conviviality. Tuna, prepared live by local associations, is served with piperade in a unique, affordably priced meal, accompanied by the sounds of 'bandas' and concerts that punctuate this festive day.

Fête du Thon: The Maritime Soul of Saint-Jean-de-Luz

The Fête du Thon is one of the most emblematic events in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a vibrant tribute to the maritime tradition of this Basque fishing port. For over half a century, it has kicked off the summer festivities, bringing together locals and visitors around the king of Basque coast fish.

A Centuries-Old Tradition

The origins of tuna fishing in Saint-Jean-de-Luz date back to the 15th century, when the port was already one of the most important in France thanks to whaling and cod fishing. From the 20th century onwards, Basque fishermen specialized in sardine and tuna fishing, making the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz - Ciboure the leading tuna and sardine port in France in the 1960s. The Fête du Thon proudly perpetuates this maritime memory.

A Festive Program from Noon to Dawn

The festival unfolds across three main sites:

Place Foch

  • Food and drink stands open from 12 PM
  • Entertainment by the Kaskarot Banda
  • DJ sets and concerts throughout the day
  • Rock and contemporary music concerts in the evening

Place Louis XIV

  • Arrival of the 'bandas' from 6 PM
  • Funk, soul, and rock concerts in the evening

Port

  • Seated meal from 6 PM: a set menu of tuna with piperade, Basque cake, bread, and wine
  • Musical atmosphere with 'bandas' and traditional groups

A Unifying Event

Organized in both Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure, the Fête du Thon unites both sides of the port in a shared festive spirit. Local associations prepare and serve the tuna, creating an atmosphere of conviviality and sharing that has made this popular event renowned.
