About Toro de Fuego

The Toro de Fuego is an unmissable summer tradition in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Every summer, on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, the Place Louis XIV ignites to the rhythm of this unique pyrotechnic show, accompanied by the famous music of Granada. A wooden bull equipped with pyrotechnic devices crosses the square, spitting flames, captivating spectators of all ages. Preceded by a confetti battle and Basque music concerts, the Toro de Fuego perpetuates a tradition inherited from Hispanic culture that is said to have been present since the marriage of Louis XIV in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1660.

The Toro de Fuego: A Fiery Tradition

The Toro de Fuego is one of the most iconic summer highlights in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This festive parody of a bullfight, now a deeply rooted tradition in Southwestern France, turns the Place Louis XIV into a stage of flames and light twice a week throughout the summer.

Ancient Origins

The roots of the Toro de Fuego date back to antiquity. As early as the 3rd century BC, ancestors would coat the horns of oxen with pitch or resin and set them alight. Legend has it that Louis XIV himself witnessed this spectacle during his wedding to the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1660. The first documented Toro de Fuego in France took place in 1894 during the Dax festivals, created by Pierre Marmajou, who founded a pyrotechnics company in Dax in 1889.

How the Evening Unfolds

Every Toro de Fuego evening follows a well-established ritual:

  • 8:30 PM: Confetti booths open on Place Louis XIV, selling bags until 11:00 PM—up to 1,500 bags on the busiest nights.
  • 9:00 PM: The confetti battle begins, fun for both children and adults.
  • Concert or dance at the bandstand: The Basque male choir Alaiak, an ensemble from Hendaye performing for over thirty years, hosts Wednesday nights; Sundays feature live dance orchestras.
  • 10:30 PM: The lights go out, the music stops, and the Toro de Fuego show begins, accompanied by the famous Granada music. On some late-season nights, the start time is pushed to 11:00 PM.

A Show for Everyone

Lasting about ten minutes, the Toro de Fuego delights visitors and locals, young and old alike. The wooden bull, carried by a person hidden beneath the structure, charges across the square, spitting sparks and flames to create a stunning pyrotechnic display in the summer night.
