Moissac, the capital of Chasselas AOP
Every September, Moissac celebrates its fruity treasure: the Chasselas de Moissac, the first fresh fruit in France to receive the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée in 1971, followed by the European AOP status in 1996. The Fruit and Flavours Festival is a vibrant showcase for a region whose identity is inseparable from its hillsides and its long-standing arboricultural expertise.
The festival takes place on the Allées de l'Uvarium in Moissac. Producers and artisans set up a gourmet market dedicated to Chasselas and other fruits from the Moissac basin—melons, kiwis, apples, and plums—alongside specialties from neighbouring regions, such as Roquefort cheese, oysters from the Arcachon basin, and Agen prunes. Everything can be enjoyed on-site or taken home throughout the day.
A 2025 edition packed with activities
The 34th edition, held on September 13th and 14th, 2025, offers a great glimpse of what the festival has to offer: around fifty exhibitors on the Allées de l'Uvarium, a free 8 km family hike on Saturday morning, live painting, the tradition of gifting a vine plant to newborns of the year, a giant Chasselas tart prepared by three local bakers and shared on Saturday late afternoon, concerts, a parade, floral workshops, culinary demonstrations, and a jam-making competition on Sunday.
The exact programme varies from year to year; the City of Moissac publishes the detailed schedule for each edition on moissac.fr, usually a few weeks before the event.
Chasselas de Moissac, an exceptional product
Chasselas de Moissac is grown on the clay-limestone hillsides overlooking the Tarn and Garonne rivers. Around 165 producers cultivate it across some 346 hectares using low-trellis methods, with strictly manual harvesting and rigorous quality standards. Its golden skin, firm flesh, and sweet, low-acid flavour make it a favourite among gourmets and a cornerstone of the Tarn-et-Garonne agricultural economy. The festival is the perfect opportunity for visitors to meet the producers who keep this heritage alive.
Moissac, a setting of exceptional heritage
The festival takes place in a town steeped in history. Moissac is world-renowned for its Saint-Pierre Abbey, a masterpiece of Romanesque art whose sculpted south portal tympanum is considered one of the pinnacles of medieval sculpture. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, it welcomes pilgrims and tourists alike every year. The cloister, the banks of the Tarn, and the Garonne lateral canal can all be visited just a few minutes' walk from the Allées de l'Uvarium.
