Celebration of the green asparagus of Ventoux in the Provencal village of Mormoiron, with a producers' market, tastings, and open-air family activities
Every spring, Mormoiron celebrates green asparagus, a jewel of market gardening in the foothills of Mont Ventoux. In this hilltop village at the gates of the Comtat Venaissin, local producers, amateur cooks, and families gather to celebrate this prestigious vegetable, hand-picked in the light, well-drained soils of the Ventoux foothills. A market for fresh asparagus, gourmet tastings, culinary activities, and a village festival atmosphere make up a convivial and free day in the heart of Provence.
At the foot of Mont Ventoux, in the fertile plain stretching between Mormoiron, Mazan, and Villes-sur-Auzon, asparagus cultivation is a centuries-old tradition. The sandy, well-drained soils of the Ventoux foothills, combined with generous sunshine and controlled irrigation, provide ideal conditions for growing green asparagus, renowned for its delicacy, tenderness, and pronounced flavor.
The green asparagus of Ventoux is hand-picked with care as soon as spring's first warmth arrives—from April to June—by market gardeners committed to preserving the quality and authenticity of a product that is the pride of the region. Its tender green to dark green color, straight and firm stalk, tight tip, and slightly herbaceous and sweet flavor make it one of the most prized asparagus by Provencal chefs and food lovers.
Mormoiron is an authentic Provencal village, nestled on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Comtat plain, halfway between Carpentras and Mazan. Its 12th-century Romanesque church, its golden stone alleys, its communal bread oven, and its houses clustered around the central rock form a typical picture of Provence's hilltop villages. Surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and market gardens, Mormoiron lives to the rhythm of the agricultural seasons and its nourishing lands.
The Fête de l'Asperge is the main popular event of the year in Mormoiron. Every last Sunday in April, it brings together the village community and its visitors around an emblematic product, in a spirit of typically Provencal sharing and conviviality. The villagers and producers are the primary actors of the festival, which would not take place without their commitment and passion for the land.
The heart of the Fête de l'Asperge is the large producers' market set up in the village square and surrounding alleys. Market gardeners from Mormoiron, Mazan, Villes-sur-Auzon, and neighboring villages offer bunches of freshly picked asparagus, sold at producer prices, in a traditional Provencal market atmosphere.
Visitors can buy extra-fresh green asparagus, sorted directly from the day's harvest, but also discover other market garden and local products from the region: zucchini, tomatoes, aromatic herbs, olive oil, honey from the Ventoux garrigue, goat cheese, and local wines. The market is also an opportunity to chat directly with producers, understand cultivation methods, and get valuable tips for cooking asparagus at home.
The festival would be incomplete without the collective asparagus tasting, a great moment of conviviality that brings the whole village together. Local chefs and regional restaurateurs prepare asparagus in multiple ways: steamed with an olive oil and herb vinaigrette, in a Provencal gratin, in a creamy soup, in a thin tart, in risotto, or sautéed with garlic and thyme. Visitors can taste and compare the preparations in a friendly, communal dining atmosphere.
Culinary workshops are offered throughout the day to learn how to peel, prepare, and cook green asparagus with professional techniques. Children participate in creative and educational workshops about asparagus and gardening, with explanations on market gardening and the vegetable's life cycle. A contest for the most beautiful bunch of asparagus and the best recipe adds to the festive, warm atmosphere.
Musical entertainment punctuates the day, with Provencal music groups, accordionists, and local choirs creating a festive atmosphere in the village square. Folkloric groups in traditional Provencal costumes may entertain during meal times, evoking a patronal feast atmosphere. Music, laughter, and cooking aromas fill the alleys of Mormoiron for a timeless day.
The festival is also an opportunity for villagers to open their homes and gardens, offer tours of old Mormoiron, and introduce visitors to the discreet charms of this Ventoux village, still preserved from mass tourism. It is one of the most authentic and lesser-known local festivals in the Vaucluse, making it an even more precious event.
The Fête de l'Asperge de Mormoiron is entirely free. Activities, tastings, and shows are open to everyone, without reservation. Families with children, passing hikers, lovers of local products, and those curious about Provencal life are welcome. Local catering is available on-site for lunch at tables and benches set up in the shade of the plane trees in the village square.
