The great Ascension wine festival on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville in Guebwiller
Created in the early 1950s on the initiative of Charles Cadé, president of the Guebwiller wine syndicate, the Foire aux Vins de Guebwiller is held every Ascension Thursday on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville. More than 200 Alsatian wines offered by local estates, a guest of honor from a major French wine region, musical entertainment, a "Marché des Papilles" (Taste Market), trail races, and a festive program for the whole family make this day an unmissable event in the southern Alsace vineyards.
The Foire aux Vins de Guebwiller was born in the early 1950s, driven by the desire of Charles Cadé, then president of the Guebwiller wine syndicate, to celebrate the richness of the local vineyard. Since then, every Ascension Thursday, the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville transforms into a huge open-air tasting cellar. In 2026, the fair will celebrate its 75th edition, demonstrating the vitality of a tradition deeply rooted in the identity of Guebwiller.
The wine estates of Guebwiller and its surroundings take over the square to offer more than 200 Alsatian wines for tasting and sale. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Pinot Noir, and Crémant d'Alsace are presented side by side, allowing visitors to explore the full range of Alsatian grape varieties. The prestigious Grands Crus Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel, exceptional terroirs surrounding Guebwiller, are particularly highlighted during this day.
Each year, the Foire aux Vins welcomes a guest of honor from a major French wine region. In 2026, the vineyards of Margaux Médoc, in Gironde, will be honored with the Micalet and Desmirail châteaux, offering visitors a rare opportunity to taste exceptional Bordeaux wines alongside Alsatian wines. This dialogue between terroirs enriches the oenological dimension of the event.
The "Marché des Papilles" brings together local producers and food artisans: honeys, artisanal jams, traditional breads, cheeses, and Alsatian specialties make up a gourmet trail that complements the wine tastings. On-site catering offers Alsatian gastronomic classics — tarte flambée, choucroute, pretzels — in a friendly and festive atmosphere.
The fair is not limited to tastings. Concerts and musical performances entertain the square throughout the day, featuring various artists. In 2025, Star Academy finalists Ebony and Julien Lieb performed on stage. The "Foulées de la Foire aux Vins", trail races organized in partnership with the Régiment de marche du Tchad, offer three courses (6.5 km, 11 km, and 18 km) through the surrounding vineyards and hills. Guided heritage tours, children's entertainment with inflatable structures, and Alsatian folk shows complete the program.
Guebwiller holds a unique place in the Alsatian vineyard: it is the only commune in Alsace to possess four Grands Crus — Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel. This exceptional wine heritage, set against the foothills of the Vosges and the Neuenbourg, the former castle of the prince-abbots of Murbach, gives the Foire aux Vins a remarkable historical and scenic setting. The Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, framed by the Notre-Dame church and Renaissance facades, provides an ideal backdrop for this celebration of wine and terroir.
