The great Ascension wine festival on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville in Guebwiller
The Guebwiller Wine Fair was born in the early 1950s, driven by Charles Cadé, then president of the Guebwiller winegrowers' union, who wished to celebrate the richness of the local vineyard. Since then, every Ascension Thursday, the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville transforms into a huge open-air tasting cellar. In 2026, the fair celebrated its 75th edition, testifying to the vitality of a tradition deeply rooted in Guebwiller's identity.
Around twenty winegrowers from Guebwiller and its surroundings (19 estates at the 2026 edition) take over the square to offer nearly 180 Alsatian wines for tasting and sale. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Pinot Noir, and Crémant d'Alsace stand side by side, allowing visitors to explore the entire range of Alsatian grape varieties. The prestigious Grands Crus Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel, exceptional terroirs surrounding Guebwiller, are particularly highlighted on this day.
Each year, the Wine Fair welcomes a guest of honour from a major French wine region. Past choices have featured Margaux-Médoc (Gironde), notably with Châteaux Micalet and Desmirail. In 2026, the Bergeracois vineyard (Bergerac Sud-Dordogne) was honoured, represented by Domaine du Grand Mayne and Château de Tiregand, offering visitors the rare opportunity to taste wines from the South-West alongside Alsatian crus. This dialogue between terroirs enriches the oenological dimension of the event.
The Marché des Papilles brings together regional producers and culinary artisans: specialty breads, cold cuts and terrines, cheeses, foie gras, craft beers, cakes, jams, honeys, and fruit juices make up a gourmet journey that complements the wine tastings. On-site catering offers Alsatian gastronomic classics — tarte flambée, sauerkraut, pretzels — in a friendly and festive atmosphere.
The fair is not limited to tastings. Concerts and musical performances enliven the square throughout the day. Les Foulées de la Foire aux Vins (Wine Fair Races), trail runs organized in partnership with the Régiment de marche du Tchad, offer three routes (a non-timed 7.3 km walk, and two timed races of 11.5 km and 20.5 km) through the surrounding vineyards and hills. Guided tours of the wine heritage, children's entertainment, wooden games, and Alsatian folk shows complete the program.
Guebwiller holds a unique place in the Alsatian vineyard: it is the only commune in Alsace to possess four Grands Crus — Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel. This exceptional wine heritage, nestled against the foothills of the Vosges and the Neuenbourg, former castle of the prince-abbots of Murbach, gives the Wine Fair a remarkable historical and scenic setting. The Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, framed by the Notre-Dame church and Renaissance facades, offers an ideal backdrop for this celebration of wine and terroir.
