Traditional cherry and horse fair since 1472 in Mauriac
The Foire de la Saint-Mary is one of the oldest and most emblematic events in Mauriac. It originated from an edict by King Louis XI dated 1472, which authorized the holding of an annual fair on June 8th, the feast day of Saint Mary, the city's patron saint. What began as a religious pilgrimage gradually evolved to include commercial activities, with "pagis" (peasants in the local dialect) setting up their stalls in the town's streets.
The Foire de la Saint-Mary is traditionally known for its cherry stalls and its horse fair. In early June, Cantal cherries ripen, and local producers come to sell them on large stalls set up in the streets. Simultaneously, the equine fair brings together breeders and enthusiasts of draft horses, in partnership with the association of heavy horse breeders from the Pays de Mauriac. This dual agricultural and fruit tradition gives the fair its unique character in the Cantal festive landscape.
The fair takes place on two main sites: the town center of Mauriac and the Puy Saint-Mary, the site of the historic chapel dedicated to the patron saint. A free shuttle service connects the two sites throughout the day, allowing visitors to enjoy all the entertainment.
In the town center, the streets host a market of producers and artisans, with stalls selling cherries, Cantal local products, cheeses, and cured meats. Folkloric groups, such as La Sagranière, entertain the streets with traditional Auvergne music and dances.
The Foire de la Saint-Mary offers a rich program of family entertainment. From the morning, a soup and tripe service is available from 7 am to 10 am, continuing a tradition deeply rooted among regulars. Free carriage rides are organized from 9:30 am to 1 pm, offering a bucolic stroll through the town's streets. Children can enjoy pony rides starting at 10:30 am, face painting, and fun activities.
At Puy Saint-Mary, the atmosphere is just as festive with performances by an accordionist, pony rides, and food stalls offering local specialties. The Puy Saint-Mary chapel, a listed Romanesque building, can be visited on this occasion.
Over the centuries, the Foire de la Saint-Mary has evolved while preserving its soul. Agricultural workers used to come here to be hired for the haymaking season, which began in June. Today, it remains a key moment in the social life of the Pays de Mauriac, a meeting place for residents, breeders, and visitors in a friendly and cheerful atmosphere. Entry is free, and all entertainment is open to everyone.
