The Foire de la Saint-Michel: an autumn tradition in Northern Alsace
Each autumn, Reichshoffen vibrates to the rhythm of its Foire de la Saint-Michel, a popular tradition deeply rooted in the festive calendar of Northern Alsace. Called Johrmarrick in the Alsatian dialect, this great autumn fair takes its name from Saint Michael's Day (September 29th), a traditional festival that once marked the end of agricultural work and the beginning of the accounting year in Alsatian rural areas.
A market with a thousand stalls
The Place de la Castine and the Rue du Général Koenig are transformed into a vast open-air market where dozens of traveling merchants set up their stalls. You can find everything: textiles and clothing, household linen, household goods, artisanal soaps, confectionery, leather goods, and of course, many local Alsatian products. Visitors wander among the stalls, looking for bargains and treasures.
Funfair and rides
The fair is accompanied by a funfair with rides, bumper cars, shooting galleries, and fairground attractions that delight children and families. This festive dimension transforms the center of Reichshoffen into a true place of popular entertainment for several days.
A unifying event
The Foire de la Saint-Michel is more than just a market. It is a social event that brings together the inhabitants of Reichshoffen, Nehwiller, and the surrounding communes of the Pays de Niederbronn. Reunions between neighbors, discussions over mulled wine or grilled sausages, family strolls among the stalls: the fair is a highlight of communal life that strengthens bonds between generations.
A living festive heritage
As in many Alsatian communes, traditional fairs like the Foire de la Saint-Michel perpetuate a festive heritage inherited from past centuries. They recall the time when these commercial gatherings were essential moments in the economic and social life of the villages, allowing for the exchange of goods, the conclusion of business, and the celebration of the cycle of the seasons.
