The traditional winter fair of Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye
The Foire du 30 Janvier is a traditional trade and craft fair held every end of January in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, in Puisaye-Forterre. Organized in the castle park and multi-purpose hall, it brings together art crafts, regional gastronomy, and equestrian demonstrations in the birthplace village of Colette, perpetuating a centuries-old rural tradition in the heart of the Puisaye countryside.
Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye (89520) perpetuates every end of January the Foire du 30 de Janvier, one of the oldest and most endearing commercial events in Puisaye-Forterre. Set up in the castle park and its surroundings, this winter fair has marked the agricultural and artisanal calendar of this region of the Yonne for generations.
Heir to the great seasonal fairs that once punctuated the economic life of the Burgundian countryside, the Foire du 30 Janvier has crossed the decades while retaining its popular and warm character. Organized around January 30th — or the closest Sunday — it brings together hundreds of visitors each year from the villages of Puisaye and beyond, attracted by the richness of its exhibitors and the authenticity of its atmosphere.
The event takes place in an exceptional setting: Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye is famous for being the birthplace of Colette, the great French novelist whose childhood home is now a museum. The fair is thus part of a territory steeped in literary history and peasant memory, in the heart of the countryside that Colette so magnificently described in her works.
The Foire du 30 Janvier is organized into several thematic areas:
One of the particularities of the Foire du 30 Janvier is the equestrian demonstration held in the morning. In the tradition of agricultural and equestrian fairs that marked the rural calendar, this demonstration recalls the importance of the horse in the economy and heritage of Puisaye. Amateurs and breeders appreciate this moment of display, which gives the event a rustic and authentic flavor.
In the afternoon, there are activities for all audiences: shows for children, tastings, music, and a popular atmosphere liven up the site from 10 am to 5 pm. The fair is an opportunity for the whole family to brave the January cold and enjoy a festive and friendly day in this charming village of Puisaye. Admission is free, making the event accessible to all.
The Foire du 30 Janvier is held on Sunday, February 1, 2026, in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye.
