When the conventioned stage takes to the streets
Friction(s) was born in 2013 from the desire of Château Rouge, a conventioned stage in Annemasse, to leave its theater walls and meet the residents in public spaces. The festival draws its name from the fruitful friction between the arts and the city, between artists and passers-by, between the spectacular and the everyday.
Since its creation, Friction(s) has established itself as a major cultural event for Annemasse and its surrounding area, attracting a family-oriented and curious audience with a demanding yet accessible program, driven by the event's complete freeness.
Theater, circus, dance, and music in public spaces
The Friction(s) program covers a wide spectrum of performing arts: street theater, contemporary circus, dance, music, puppetry, and hybrid forms take over the squares, streets, parks, and unexpected places in Annemasse for three days. The festival brings together renowned companies and emerging artists, offering both monumental outdoor creations and intimate performances.
One of Friction(s)'s unique features is the creation of a spectator's journey that invites them to move throughout the city, rediscovering familiar places transformed by the artistic offerings. This urban exploration is at the heart of the festival experience.
A festival rooted in the cross-border territory
Located on the Franco-Swiss border, Annemasse occupies a unique geographical position that the festival leverages. Friction(s) extends beyond the city and attracts an audience from the Annemasse agglomeration, the Greater Geneva area, and neighboring Switzerland. The festival contributes to affirming Annemasse's cultural identity and positioning Château Rouge as a leading cultural player in the Lake Geneva region.
Freeness and accessibility
True to the values of Château Rouge and the City of Annemasse, Friction(s) is an entirely free festival. This freeness is not an artistic compromise but a strong political choice, aiming to make performing arts accessible to the greatest number of people and to promote diverse audiences. The festival also offers mediation and artistic education activities throughout the year, extending the event beyond the three days of performances.
