European Mill and Milling Heritage Days
The Jonzac Mill Festival celebrates milling heritage during the European Mill Days in May. This free event opens the doors of the Cluzelet Windmill and the Chez Bret Watermill, restored 18th-century working mills, with guided tours by the millers, traditional games, storytelling, medieval bread-making demonstrations, chess jazz, and concerts.
The Mill Festival highlights Jonzac's exceptional milling heritage during the European Mill and Milling Heritage Days, held annually in May. The town has restored and brought back into operation two 18th-century mills: the Cluzelet Windmill, which produces flour, and the Chez Bret Watermill, which produces walnut oil.
From 10 am to 6 pm, the doors of the mills open to visitors, with millers present for guided tours. The association "Les Jeux d'un autre temps" (Games of Another Time) offers traditional wooden games, the Haute-Saintonge library organizes storytelling sessions at 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm. Saxophonist and chess player Franck Minous hosts "chess jazz" games. The Talmeliers de Terrignis demonstrate medieval bread-making. Stands selling honey, jams, sweet and savory crepes, an exhibition on bats, and a concert by the Chœur voyageur (Traveling Choir) at the church complete this day of heritage discovery.
