Weekend of heritage discovery in Loir-et-Cher

Blois — Loir-et-Cher (41) Since 1984

About JEP Loir-et-Cher

The European Heritage Days in Loir-et-Cher are the departmental version of this national and European event created in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture. Every third weekend of September, hundreds of heritage sites in the department exceptionally open their doors to the public: Loire castles, historic residences, religious buildings, industrial sites, remarkable gardens, departmental archives, and places usually closed to the public. Blois, with its royal castle, its Renaissance private mansions, and its House of Magic, is the beating heart of these days in the department.

European Heritage Days: Loir-et-Cher opens its treasures

Every third weekend of September, Loir-et-Cher enthusiastically participates in the European Heritage Days, a major cultural event created in 1984 by the Ministry of Culture and extended to the European level in 1991. The department, rich in exceptional heritage linked to the history of the Kings of France and the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most attractive regions in France for this event.

Exceptional heritage to discover

Loir-et-Cher boasts a heritage of remarkable richness and diversity:

  • The Loire Castles: Chambord, Cheverny, Chaumont-sur-Loire, the royal castle of Blois, Beauregard, Fougères-sur-Bièvre, Talcy, and many others
  • Religious heritage: the Saint-Louis cathedral of Blois, the abbey of La Trinité de Vendôme, the Romanesque churches of the Cher Valley
  • Historic residences: Renaissance private mansions of Blois, troglodyte houses of Troo and the Loir Valley
  • Natural and landscape heritage: gardens of the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, remarkable parks and gardens
  • Industrial and artisanal heritage: mills, tile factories, wine cellars, artisan workshops

Blois, heart of the Heritage Days

Blois, the prefecture of Loir-et-Cher, is the central hub of these days in the department. The city offers a particularly rich program: guided tours of the royal castle and its four wings combining Gothic, Renaissance, and classical styles; opening of the Maison de la Magie Robert-Houdin; visits to the former Visitandines convent at the Hôtel du Département; architectural discovery of the old town and its private mansions.

Activities for all audiences

Beyond site openings, the Heritage Days in Loir-et-Cher offer a program of varied activities: themed guided tours, educational workshops for children, street performances, concerts in heritage locations, temporary exhibitions, conferences, and discovery trails. Many activities are specially designed for young audiences, with games, creative workshops, and adapted tours.

A free and popular event

The European Heritage Days are a mostly free event, allowing everyone to discover or rediscover the heritage richness of Loir-et-Cher. Each year, tens of thousands of visitors participate in this heritage celebration in the department, confirming the attachment of residents and tourists to this cultural event of the back-to-school season.
