The comedy festival that makes the old mining town vibrate
La Machine à Rire is a comedy festival created by the youth association Bain Douche Jeunes in the town of La Machine, a former mining town in the Nièvre region. For over ten years, this unique festival has offered two annual highlights: a young talent competition in March and evenings with headliners of comedy in late June, at the Hôtel des Mineurs. The festival continues on the church square with an open mic, street performances, and a flea market, proving that laughter is a culture open to all.
The town of La Machine, in the southwest of Nièvre, owes its name to the coal extraction machines that brought it prosperity from the 17th to the 20th century. Since the mines closed in 1974, the town has been reinventing itself through culture and events. The La Machine à Rire festival embodies this renaissance with flair and good humor, transforming the former mining town into the Nièvre capital of comedy.
The festival is driven by the association Bain Douche Jeunes, a collective of young residents of La Machine determined to revitalize their town by organizing major cultural events. Their goal: to prove that laughter is a universal vector of sharing and social connection, and that culture can flourish everywhere, including in the most modest rural areas.
The festival unfolds in two complementary highlights. The first Saturday in March hosts a young comedy talent competition, a springboard for aspiring comedians who come to test their acts in front of the Machinois audience. This competition has helped discover many talents before they break through on the national stage.
The last Friday and Saturday in June mark the festival's climax with exceptional evenings at the Hôtel des Mineurs, welcoming headliners of French comedy. Over the years, the festival has hosted renowned artists such as Roland Magdane, Audrey Lamy, Chantal Ladesou, and Éric Antoine.
On Sunday, the festival continues outdoors on the church square with popular and family-friendly programming: open mic for comedy enthusiasts, street performances, a flea market, and various activities. This last day offers a moment of village conviviality, anchoring the festival in the daily life of La Machine.
La Machine à Rire returns in 2026 with its young talent competition in March and its gala evenings in late June.
