The student festival of École Centrale Paris in Châtenay-Malabry
La Nuit des Troubadours is much more than just a student festival: it's an institution in the Hauts-de-Seine region. Born in the 1990s on the campus of École Centrale Paris in Châtenay-Malabry, this annual event has become over the decades a must-attend gathering for fans of live music, street performances, and circus arts in the Paris region.
Every December, the school's campus transforms into a vast festive space. From 8 PM, the gates open to an eclectic program that doesn't end until the early morning. The main stage hosts rock, reggae, electro, and French chanson bands, while jugglers, fire-eaters, acrobats, and magicians entertain the crowd in the alleys and courtyards.
The 20th-anniversary edition in 2014 featured iconic bands like Babylon Circus, a true monument of French reggae-ska with over 1,000 concerts in 25 countries, and Glasgow artist Soom T & JStar with their unclassifiable reggamuffin style. Local bands and amateur musicians traditionally open the festivities, offering a great showcase for emerging talents.
The strength of La Nuit des Troubadours lies in its entirely volunteer-led organization. An association of about fifteen students passionate about music, shows, and parties handles all the event's logistics: artistic programming, ticketing, bars, security, and decoration. This associative model ensures accessible ticket prices and a warm, relaxed atmosphere that professional festivals often struggle to replicate.
The festival is open to everyone—students, alumni, locals, and music lovers—and provides a rare moment of social and cultural mixing in the urban fabric of the Hauts-de-Seine.
The architectural setting of the École Centrale Paris campus offers an ideal backdrop for this type of event. The school's buildings, esplanades, and green spaces lend themselves to original scenography, with several stages and performance areas scattered across the site. As night falls, the light shows and the flames of the fire-eaters give the whole place a truly magical atmosphere.
Since the relocation of École Centrale to the Saclay plateau (renamed CentraleSupélec), the festival has undergone adaptations but retains its founding spirit: a night of celebration, encounters, and musical sharing in a place steeped in student history.
For the residents of Châtenay-Malabry and neighboring towns, La Nuit des Troubadours is part of the local cultural landscape. It contributes to the animation of the territory and the nightlife of a department, the Hauts-de-Seine, which has no shortage of cultural assets but where large-scale festive events remain rare. The deliberately low ticket price allows everyone to access it.
La Nuit des Troubadours continues its festive tradition in December 2026 on the Châtenay-Malabry campus. As every year, the student association is preparing a program combining live concerts by emerging and established bands, circus performances, juggling, magic, and fire-eating shows, for a night that stretches until dawn. Ticketing and the program will be announced in autumn 2026 on the festival's social media.
