Les Expressifs: Thirty Years of Street Creativity

Founded in 1996 by the Poitiers Jeunes association, the Les Expressifs festival carries on a long-standing tradition of cultural vibrancy in Poitiers. Its roots trace back to the 1970s "Scoop en Stock" festival, which evolved into "Poitiers Presse Papiers" in 1995 before adopting its current name. Over three decades, Les Expressifs has established itself as a must-attend event for street arts in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

A Festival at the Heart of the City

Every year in early October, Poitiers' historic center transforms into a vast artistic playground. Performances take over pedestrian streets, squares, plazas, and public spaces between place Charles de Gaulle and place du Maréchal Leclerc. Two stages dedicated to contemporary music, the Médiathèque François-Mitterrand, and the Espace Mendès-France round out the venues. This urban takeover invites the public to wander freely and be surprised by performances around every corner.

A Multidisciplinary and Committed Program

The strength of Les Expressifs lies in its diverse programming. Street theater, contemporary dance, circus, puppetry, emerging music, digital arts, storytelling, mime, and juggling all come together over three days of festivities. The festival brings together nationally and internationally renowned companies alongside amateur and emerging artists, striking a unique balance between discovery and artistic excellence. Each edition takes a committed look at society, addressing themes such as gender equality, student struggles, and the defense of culture.

A Free Event Accessible to All

True to its mission of cultural democratization, the Les Expressifs festival is entirely free and requires no reservations. More than 10,000 spectators per day fill the streets of Poitiers to enjoy over sixty-five performances. The festival also offers programming adapted for people with disabilities, participatory workshops, and artist meet-and-greets, making every edition a moment of sharing and conviviality.

Strong Local Roots

Supported by Grand Poitiers Communauté urbaine and numerous institutional partners, Les Expressifs reaches far beyond the borders of the Vienne department. The festival collaborates with European organizations like the CCHAR, the Swiss center for street arts, and hosts professional days in partnership with Grand'Rue, the regional federation for street and public space arts.
