The national music festival in bars
Every last weekend of November, the Festival Culture Bar-Bars takes over the cafes and bistros of Poitiers to celebrate the live music scene in convivial settings. The second national cultural event after Fête de la Musique, this free event transforms bar counters into open stages featuring rock, jazz, chanson, electronic music, and live performance. In Poitiers, four establishments open their doors to local and national artists in a warm and accessible atmosphere for everyone.
Since its creation in 2003 by the Collectif Culture Bar-Bars, this national festival has established itself as the second largest cultural event in France after Fête de la Musique. Every last weekend of November, hundreds of cafes, bistros, and cultural clubs across the country transform into live stages to host thousands of artists. In Poitiers, this event unites cafe owners passionate about culture around an eclectic and entirely free program.
The Poitiers edition unfolds in several emblematic establishments in the city center and its outskirts. La Cervoiserie Poitevine, a historic participant for over a decade, hosts local headliners. Le Cluricaume Café, V&B Poitiers-Sud, and Le Palais de la Bière complete the setup by offering harmonized time slots to allow the public to move between venues throughout the evening. This organization demonstrates the solidarity between establishments, united by the desire to bring culture to life in everyday places.
The festival in Poitiers offers a wide musical panorama: from modern grunge rock with bands like Spill the Cat, to quirky French chanson with No Rest for the Frenchies, through the blues-pop of L&S, the traditional and electronic music of Le Bal Variable, or the atmospheric sounds of Starmonger. DJ sets extend the evenings late into the night, particularly at Le Cluricaume Café with artists like Malvä and DJ Charasse.
The Festival Culture Bar-Bars is more than just a music event: it is a militant act in favor of cafés-cultures, these essential places in the local and national artistic chain. Supported by the GIP Cafés Cultures, the festival promotes small cultural venues, often weakened by economic and regulatory constraints. In Poitiers, as in the 70 participating cities, the objective is twofold: to save these establishments and to offer valuable visibility to emerging artists. With over 160,000 festival-goers nationally, 3,000 artists programmed, and 636 events across 230 stages, Culture Bar-Bars embodies the vitality of the French independent scene.
The 24th edition of the Festival Culture Bar-Bars returns to Poitiers at the end of November 2026. The city's bars and cafés-cultures are preparing to host a new rich and free program.
