Les Garennes: Twenty years of music in the heart of the Sarthe

Since 2004, the Les Garennes festival has transformed the peaceful village of Souligné-sous-Ballon into a vibrant and welcoming musical stage every first Saturday of July. What began as a local initiative driven by a handful of enthusiasts has grown into one of the most beloved summer events in the northern Sarthe region, attracting a loyal and curious audience year after year.

An eclectic and high-quality lineup

The strength of Les Garennes lies in its decidedly eclectic programming. From one edition to the next, the festival navigates between jazz, world music, reggae, brass bands, and unique soundscapes. In 2025, the anniversary edition notably featured the Rennes Nola Experience, a Rennes-based brass band with New Orleans-inspired sounds, blending flamboyant horns with an irresistible groove, alongside artists from diverse musical backgrounds—ranging from Balkan music to hip-hop and reggae.

A free, family-friendly festival

Admission to the festival is completely free, a deliberate choice by the organizing association to make culture accessible to everyone. Families will find an area dedicated to activities and games for children, while food lovers can enjoy on-site catering that highlights local Sarthe produce.

Souligné-sous-Ballon, a rural commune nestled in the hills of the Maine region, provides an ideal natural backdrop for an open-air festival.
