Biennial historical reenactment festival at the Château du Lude
Organized every two years by the association Le Lude Renaissance, this festival transforms the town of Le Lude and its castle into a vast open-air theatre celebrating the Renaissance era. For two days in September, acrobats, minstrels, troubadours, artisans, and actors in period costumes take over the town's streets and castle gardens to offer falconry shows, costumed parades, Renaissance dances, artistic fencing, juggling, ancient music, and street theatre. The Château du Lude, an architectural gem located at the borders of Anjou and Touraine, unveils its 16th-century Renaissance décor across five floors, from the moat room to the North Tower.
The Le Lude Renaissance festival is a biennial historical reenactment celebration that immerses the town of Le Lude and its castle in the excitement of the Renaissance era. Spearheaded by the Le Lude Renaissance association, this festive event brings together hundreds of costumed participants, live performance troupes, and artisan craftspeople to bring one of the most glorious periods of French history back to life.
For two days, the entire town transforms. The streets of the town center, closed to car traffic, become the stage for continuous entertainment:
The Château du Lude, a listed historic monument, is the northernmost castle in the Loire Valley. Its visit, open across five floors during the festival, allows visitors to discover the sumptuous 16th-century Renaissance décor: the Italian Renaissance-style entrance hall, the polychrome wooden ceilings of the Gallery, the painting cabinet, and the North Tower offering an exceptional panorama of the Loir valley.
Open exclusively during the Le Lude Renaissance festival, the castle's vegetable garden showcases its traditional crops and heritage varieties. Culinary demonstrations are held there, perpetuating ancient recipes and techniques.
Le Lude Renaissance is an event open to all, free for under-18s, which appeals to history enthusiasts and families looking for a festive and exotic weekend. The Le Lude Renaissance association unites dozens of volunteers who ensure the organization and animation of this event, which has become a major heritage event in Sarthe.
The next edition of the Le Lude Renaissance festival will be held in September 2026 at the Château du Lude. This biennial event promises another two days of Renaissance historical reenactment with costumed parades, falconry shows, ancient music, street theatre, and artisan crafts.
The biennial Le Lude Renaissance festival returns in September 2026 for a new edition. The detailed program will be announced in the summer of 2026. Visitors will once again be able to immerse themselves in the Renaissance era with shows, parades, falconry, and exceptional visits to the castle and its vegetable garden.
