The great medieval and fantasy festival of Lescar
Created in 2003, Les Mystères de la Cité is a spectacular biennial event that transforms the historic city of Lescar, the first capital of Béarn, into a huge open-air theater. Each edition, in September, offers a journey back in time around the Notre-Dame cathedral and the medieval ramparts, combining fire shows, Nordic legends, flamboyant chivalry, a medieval market, living history camps, equestrian jousts, sound and light night shows, and fantastic animations. Free and popular, the festival attracted nearly 25,000 visitors during its last edition in 2023.
Since 2003, Les Mystères de la Cité has transported visitors into a medieval and fantasy world in the heart of the historic city of Lescar. The former capital of Béarn, Lescar boasts exceptional architectural heritage—its Notre-Dame Cathedral, a listed historic monument, its ramparts, and its medieval streets—which forms the natural setting for this unique event in Béarn.
Organized every two years in September, the festival takes over the entire historic city for a weekend of popular and immersive celebration. Around the cathedral and at the foot of the ramparts, the city transforms to offer a true journey through the centuries, blending mystery, magic, and tradition.
Each edition features a dense program centered around several highlights: a medieval market with artisans and producers, Viking and medieval living history camps, equestrian jousts and chivalry shows, fencing and archery demonstrations, fire shows and fantastic parades, Nordic tales and legends, a medieval and fantasy book fair, and a grand sound and light night show on the ramparts.
The 2025 edition particularly highlights the restoration work on the Cathedral of Lescar, the oldest building in Béarn, with nearly 110,000 slates being replaced to preserve this architectural gem. The festival thus provides an opportunity to raise public awareness about the preservation of Béarn's heritage.
True to its popular spirit, Les Mystères de la Cité is an entirely free event that brings together all generations. Nearly 25,000 visitors attended the 2023 edition, confirming the appeal of this unique gathering in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Families, history enthusiasts, lovers of live performances, and the curious mingle in a warm and festive atmosphere.
The festival runs from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, with continuous entertainment: medieval rotisserie from noon to midnight, troubadours and musicians, pony rides, role-playing games, guided tours of the city and cathedral, children's workshops, and witch shows. The climax is the sound and light night show projected onto the ramparts, offering a magical finale to each day.
Les Mystères de la Cité will return in September 2026 for a new edition in the historic city of Lescar, continuing the tradition of this great free medieval and fantasy festival.
