Festival of baroque music and world music in Le Perche
Les SuPercheries is a travelling festival of baroque music and world music created in 2021 by L'Escadron Volant de la Reine. Taking place in Le Perche between Nogent-le-Rotrou, Thiron-Gardais and the surrounding villages, the festival uses churches, gardens, barns and markets to offer concerts, musical walks and workshops. Organised in two parts — Le Printemps des SuPercheries in June and Les SuPercheries d'Été at the end of July — it invites curious ears to rediscover the region through music.
Born in 2021 from the initiative of L'Escadron Volant de la Reine, a baroque music ensemble based in Chartres, the Les SuPercheries festival aims to build bridges between artists, local socio-cultural actors, and audiences, while injecting new energy into the cultural life of Le Perche. The festival's name, a play on words between "supercherie" (trickery/hoax) and "Perche", immediately sets the tone: here, we like to surprise, subvert expectations, and create unique musical encounters.
The originality of Les SuPercheries lies in its travelling nature. Concerts and events unfold in the heritage sites of Le Perche: Romanesque churches, gardens, barns, markets, and village squares. Nogent-le-Rotrou, Thiron-Gardais, Sablons-sur-Huisne, and other towns in the region take turns hosting the musicians, transforming each location into a temporary stage. This approach allows audiences to rediscover their local heritage from a musical perspective and to travel through Le Perche with the concerts.
The festival is divided into two main events each year. Le Printemps des SuPercheries, in June, opens the season with concerts blending baroque music and world music in a spring atmosphere. Les SuPercheries d'Été, at the end of July and beginning of August, offers a grand festive weekend with a denser programme, musical walks at sunset, and outreach workshops for schools and the general public.
The artistic programme, led by L'Escadron Volant de la Reine, highlights the dialogue between baroque music and world music traditions. Repertoires by Vivaldi, Bach, or Rameau are juxtaposed with the sounds of traditional music from the East, Africa, or South America. This encounter between musical universes creates unique performances, where the ancient and the distant resonate in unexpected harmony. The festival also emphasizes cultural outreach, with educational programmes for school groups and local community actions.
Beyond the musical programme, Les SuPercheries champions a true regional project. By investing in sometimes little-known heritage sites, involving local stakeholders in the organisation, and offering accessible prices, the festival contributes to the cultural revitalisation of Le Perche and the promotion of this exceptional region to a regional and national audience.
