Ligny-en-Barrois Christmas Market: Lorraine magic and tradition

Each year in December, the town of Ligny-en-Barrois dresses up in its festive best to host its Christmas Market on the Place de la République. This event, which has become a must-attend for the inhabitants of southern Meuse, combines Lorraine tradition and Christmas magic.

A market of artisans and producers

Throughout the day, the Place de la République hosts a market of local artisans and producers offering:

  • Local Crafts: jewelry, pottery, woodwork, textiles, and original creations

The Saint Nicholas Parade

The highlight of the day is the parade of Saint Nicholas and Father Whipper floats through the streets of Ligny-en-Barrois. This Lorraine tradition, deeply rooted in local culture, delights young and old alike:

  • Father Whipper: the slightly frightening character who accompanies Saint Nicholas and reminds children to be good
  • Decorated Floats: a procession of illuminated floats travels through the town streets in a festive atmosphere
