The youth book village in Lot-et-Garonne
Since 2002, the association Mange-Livres has organized a youth book fair every year in the small village of Grateloup-Saint-Gayrand, in Lot-et-Garonne. For three days, in early June, this village of 435 inhabitants transforms into a true book city, with a large pop-up bookstore, workshops, shows, and activities that take over the streets and squares. Nearly 4,000 visitors flock each year to discover this unique rural event.
Each edition invites about ten youth literature authors and illustrators to share their creative universe. The encounters take various forms:
The fair is not just about the three days of festivities. Starting in October, the Mange-Livres association works with schools in the department to prepare for the author meetings. Approximately 50 classes and 1,500 students participate in this preparation, which includes writing workshops, readings, and artistic projects based on the guests' works. This approach allows children to arrive at the fair having already discovered and engaged with the creators' worlds.
The Mange-Livres association is a member of the Federation of Youth Book Fairs and Festivals, which brings together 28 fairs sharing a charter of quality and common values. In 2023, Mange-Livres was awarded the trophy for associative commitment and territorial animation, recognizing 20 years of involvement and sharing of quality literature accessible to all.
The Mange-Livres fair aims to be a friendly and warm event, open to everyone: specialists and novices, young and old, children and adults. The youth literature offered emphasizes daydreaming, reflection, and imagination. Admission is free, and all activities are accessible to everyone, making Mange-Livres a true moment of cultural sharing in a rural setting.
The fair is held every year in early June, over three days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). Thursday and Friday are dedicated to school groups (by prior registration with the association). Saturday is the public day, from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with meetings, book signings, workshops, shows, and literary walks open to all.
The fair takes place in the village of Grateloup-Saint-Gayrand, mainly on the Place de la République and throughout the streets and spaces of the village, which transforms into a true book city for the duration of the festival.
Free admission for all events and activities. The pop-up bookstore offers books by the invited authors for sale.
A snack bar and on-site catering are available during Saturday, allowing visitors to fully enjoy their day in the village.
As the fair takes place outdoors and in the village streets, accessibility may be limited for people with reduced mobility. Please feel free to contact the association in advance to inquire about possible arrangements and reception conditions.
