A charming medieval village plunges back into its past every summer
Every first weekend of August, the medieval village of Monestiés, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, hosts its Medieval Festival. For two days, stone alleys, ramparts, and squares are filled with knights, period artisans, costumed merchants, and medieval musicians. A free, friendly, and family-friendly event in the heart of the Tarn.
Monestiés is one of those villages that seem to have crossed the centuries without aging. Its cobbled streets, well-preserved ramparts, pink sandstone houses, and Saint-Jacques church make it one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, and a naturally ideal setting for a plunge into the Middle Ages. It is in this exceptional setting that the Medieval Festival of Monestiés takes place each year, having become over ten editions one of the essential festive events in the Tarn.
For two days, the entire village is transformed. Residents don their medieval costumes, squares come alive with encampments, and alleys echo with the clash of arms and the melodies of troubadours. The program combines shows, workshops, and participatory activities:
For its 10th edition, the Monestiés Medieval Festival introduced a significant innovation: a life-size quest launched on Friday evening, allowing participants to immerse themselves in a medieval scenario through the village alleys. A participatory experience that highlights the organizers' commitment to offering ever more connection and interaction with visitors.
Monestiés boasts a rare medieval heritage in the Tarn. The Saint-Jacques chapel houses an exceptional set of 15th-century polychrome statues of outstanding quality, created in a style close to Flemish sculpture. The fortified town, founded in the Middle Ages, has retained its gates, alleys, and medieval urban plan. The Medieval Festival naturally fits into this living memory, inviting residents and visitors each summer to reconnect with this glorious past.
The Medieval Festival of Monestiés returns in early August 2026 to the alleys of this Most Beautiful Village of France. The 11th edition promises, as every year, a free medieval immersion with encampments, artisans, combat, concerts, and activities for the whole family.
