The Middle Ages come alive in Vielmur-sur-Agout
Each summer, Vielmur-sur-Agout travels back in time and reconnects with its medieval origins during its Medieval Festival. Organized at the Granges de Vielmur, this free and family-friendly event invites young and old to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, with traditional crafts, knight combats, and educational workshops. A heritage and festive gathering that highlights the history of the Tarn and the medieval village of Vielmur-sur-Agout.
Medieval Crafts and Ancestral Know-How
At the heart of the festival, a medieval craft market brings together passionate artisans who practice and pass on medieval trades and techniques: blacksmithing and metalworking, illumination, tanning, traditional pottery, medieval luthiery, embroidery and weaving, and wax and candle making. These artisans, dressed in period costume, create their works live, explain their techniques, and answer public questions with pedagogy and enthusiasm. A rare opportunity to discover ancestral skills and acquire unique artisanal pieces.
Combat and Jousts: Knight Spectacles
A medieval festival wouldn't be complete without its knights in armor. The historical reenactment groups present at Vielmur offer medieval combat demonstrations: sword duels, melee combat, and the use of staves and war axes. These dynamic and spectacular shows, performed by rigorously documented medieval military history enthusiasts, transport the audience back to the time of knights and feudal lords of Languedoc.
Medieval Workshops for Children
The Vielmur Medieval Festival places a special emphasis on educational outreach and welcoming families. Medieval workshops are offered to children throughout the weekend: calligraphy and illumination, introduction to medieval games (archery, medieval ring toss, skittles), creating a personal coat of arms, making clay coins, and learning about medieval costume. These workshops, led by passionate educators, allow children to immerse themselves in history in a fun and memorable way.
Medieval Music and Street Performances
Musicians and troubadours in period costume wander through the festival grounds, filling the aisles with medieval melodies played on reconstructed ancient instruments: hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, recorder, and tambourine. Street performers, jugglers, and fire-eaters animate the festive area with their shows. The ensemble creates an authentically medieval atmosphere that transports visitors to another time.
Vielmur-sur-Agout, a Medieval Village on the Banks of the Agout
Vielmur-sur-Agout is a charming Tarn village steeped in medieval history. Its medieval bridge, picturesque alleys, and location on the banks of the Agout river make it an ideal natural and historical setting for a medieval festival. The Granges de Vielmur, an agricultural and heritage site on the outskirts of the village, provides the necessary space to host the various festival areas—craft market, combat arena, workshop spaces—in an authentic rural environment.
