A magical Christmas village in the heart of the maritime city
Every December, the Place du Général de Gaulle in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin transforms into a magical Christmas village with about twenty wooden chalets. The market offers artisanal creations, local Cotentin products, delicacies, and hot drinks. Illuminations, shows, Santa's parade, and charity chalets make this free event an unmissable family gathering.
Every December, Cherbourg-en-Cotentin dons its festive attire to host its Christmas Market on the Place du Général de Gaulle, in the heart of the city. About twenty beautifully decorated wooden chalets are set up around the fountain, creating a warm and festive Christmas village. The magical illuminations and careful scenography transform the square into a true jewel box of lights that delights young and old alike.
The Cherbourg Christmas Market highlights local crafts and products from the Cotentin region. About thirty artisans and producers, mainly from the Cotentin, offer their creations in the chalets: ceramics, jewelry, handmade soaps, Christmas decorations, local gastronomic products, and seasonal delicacies. Two chalets are dedicated to hot drinks—mulled wine, hot cider, and hot chocolate—essential for warming up against the sea breeze.
The entertainment program runs throughout December. The inauguration at the beginning of the month is accompanied by the city's illuminations and a parade through the town center. Saturdays are marked by processions and shows, while the grand Santa Claus parade is the highlight of the festivities. Two charity chalets are made available to charitable associations, perpetuating the spirit of sharing and generosity specific to the Christmas season.
Access to the Christmas Market is completely free and without reservation. Families can stroll among the chalets, find original gift ideas, taste seasonal specialties, and enjoy the festive atmosphere that reigns on the square. The market is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours on Saturdays. Free activities, shows, and creative workshops complete the offering to make every visit a moment of shared joy.
