Music invades the streets of Cherbourg every June 21st
Every June 21st, Cherbourg-en-Cotentin celebrates the Fête de la Musique by opening its streets, squares, and gardens to amateur and professional musicians. The port city vibrates to the rhythm of an eclectic program mixing choirs, classical ensembles, rock, and DJ sets. The Emmanuel Liais park, the Central square, and the Phélippot Le Cat square host open-air stages for a festive, free, and open-to-all evening.
Each year, June 21st marks the summer solstice and the Fête de la Musique throughout France. In Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, this popular event transforms the maritime city into a vast open-air stage. Since the first national edition in 1982, the city has continuously grown this musical celebration, investing its squares, streets, parks, and gardens to host dozens of free concerts.
The festivities unfold in the most emblematic places of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. The Emmanuel Liais park, a green setting in the heart of the city, hosts the students of the municipal Conservatory from the afternoon, presenting choirs, cello ensembles, and string orchestras. The Central square, the Phélippot Le Cat square, and the public garden become ephemeral stages where artists of all musical horizons perform.
The spirit of the Fête de la Musique is based on spontaneity and sharing. The city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin opens its public spaces to amateur and professional artists who wish to perform freely, while respecting residents and other musicians. The formations are diverse: rock bands, jazz ensembles, choirs, brass bands, DJ sets, solo musicians, and dancers. The town hall establishes a map of concert locations to guide the public.
Dance performances at the town hall, hosted by the Cherbourg dance club, complete the musical program. The concerts continue into the evening with larger ensembles, such as invited choirs and regional bands. The entire program is free and open access, true to the original spirit of this popular festival initiated by Jack Lang in 1982. The Fête de la Musique is a moment of conviviality that brings together Cherbourg residents of all ages around a common passion for music.
