Christmas magic in the heart of the Saumur town
Every year in December, the Saumur Christmas Market takes over Place de la Bilange for three weeks of winter magic. Around twenty chalets host local artisans and traders offering handmade creations, delicacies, wines, Christmas decorations, candles, and sweets. On Sundays, the market extends to Place Saint-Pierre and Rue Franklin Roosevelt with additional exhibitors. Activities for children, visits from Santa Claus, illuminations, and a warm atmosphere make this market an unmissable family event during the holiday season in Saumur.
When the first December lights illuminate the white tuffeau facades of Saumur, the Place de la Bilange is adorned with its finest decorations to welcome the Christmas Market. For nearly three weeks, about twenty wooden chalets are set up in the heart of the town, creating a warm and festive atmosphere that delights young and old alike.
Local artisans and traders occupy the chalets to offer their unique creations and handmade treasures: artisanal Christmas decorations, scented candles, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and accessories. For delicacies, visitors can discover the local specialties of Saumur and the Loire region: herbal teas, syrups, sweets, chocolates, gingerbread, and local wines, particularly the Saumur and Saumur-Champigny appellations.
On Sundays in December, the market extends to Place Saint-Pierre and Rue Franklin Roosevelt, welcoming about twenty additional exhibitors dedicated to local crafts and creators. This is an opportunity to discover an even richer selection of gift ideas and regional flavors.
The Christmas Market is punctuated by family activities throughout the season. Santa Claus makes several appearances at the market to meet children and hear their wishes. The town's illuminations, the ice rink, and the carousels complete the festive offering, transforming Saumur's town center into a true Christmas village.
The Christmas activities program, coordinated by the City of Saumur, also includes shows, concerts, and creative workshops for children, making every visit to the market a unique and enchanting experience.
