Vauban's Star-Shaped City by Torchlight
Rocroi, classified among the Petites Cités de Caractère, is a unique fortified town in France with its star-shaped radio-concentric plan. Its fortifications, an exceptional testimony to 16th-century military architecture, were remodeled by Vauban until 1675. The Night Tours of Rocroi offer a singular and striking way to rediscover this heritage, at dusk, by the flickering light of torches.
A 1.5-Hour Guided Tour Through History
Each night tour is led by a guide-lecturer who retraces the history of this fortified city, from its construction in the 16th century to the famous Battle of Rocroi in 1643, a decisive victory for the young Duke of Enghien over the Spanish Tercios. For 1.5 hours, participants walk the cobbled streets, walk along the bastions, and discover the curtain walls and military buildings that make up this remarkable defensive ensemble. The route is suitable for children aged 7 and over.
A Unique Atmosphere Between Shadow and Light
The magic of these tours lies in the incomparable atmosphere that emanates from the fortified city plunged into night. The torches cast moving shadows on the stone walls, while the guide brings to life the significant episodes of Rocroi's history. The nocturnal silence, barely disturbed by the visitors' footsteps on the cobblestones, enhances the immersion in several centuries of military and architectural history.
A Jewel of Ardennes Heritage
Rocroi is a unique example of military urban planning with its perfect geometric layout, visible from the air. The star-shaped city is a living testament to the defensive strategy developed in the 16th and 17th centuries. These night tours allow visitors to grasp the full dimension of this exceptional heritage, between military architecture, French history, and the Ardennes landscape. They are organized several times a year, particularly during the summer and on the weekends preceding Christmas.
