The Small Towns of Character in Maine-et-Loire light up for the holidays
Organized by the Association of Small Towns of Character of Maine-et-Loire, the Petites Cités d'Anjou en Lumière illuminate the heritage villages of the department each year at the end of the year. From late November to late December, the Small Towns of Character come alive by candlelight with street performances, concerts, producer markets, torchlight tours, and activities for everyone. A free event celebrating Angevin built heritage and traditions in a warm Christmas spirit.
Each year, as the end-of-year holidays approach, the Association of Small Towns of Character of Maine-et-Loire orchestrates a unique event: the Petites Cités d'Anjou en Lumière. For nearly a month, from the last weekend of November until the weekend before Christmas, the 17 Small Towns of Character in the department take turns lighting up, offering visitors enchanted evenings blending heritage, culture, and conviviality.
The concept is as simple as it is appealing: every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before Christmas, one, two, or three Small Towns of Character open their alleys and squares to celebration. The streets and lanes are lit by candlelight, lanterns, and illuminations, transforming these historic villages into magical settings. Among the participating towns are Aubigné-sur-Layon, Baugé, Blaison-Gohier, Montsoreau, Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, Savennières, Turquant, Le Puy-Notre-Dame, and many others.
The program for each evening is rich and varied. Visitors can enjoy free street performances by local and regional companies, such as "L'Envolée Fantastique" by Compagnie Pénichilline or "Luminescence" by Compagnie CHK1. Christmas markets featuring local producers and artisans, torchlight heritage tours, concerts, storytelling, and tastings of local Angevin products complete the offering. Food stalls offer hot drinks and local specialties.
Beyond the festive aspect, the event highlights the remarkable architectural and historical heritage of the Small Towns of Character. Half-timbered houses, Romanesque churches, tuffeau manor houses, troglodyte cellars: each village unveils its treasures in a luminous atmosphere that reveals their beauty in a new light. The event brings together residents, local associations, and regional artisans, creating a moment of intergenerational and authentic sharing.
True to the popular and convivial spirit that characterizes the Small Towns of Character, all activities are free and open to all. The event is designed for families, with activities suitable for children and a warm welcome in each participating town. It's the perfect opportunity to discover or rediscover the villages of Maine-et-Loire in a magical and warm atmosphere.
The 3rd edition of Petites Cités d'Anjou en Lumière will be held from November 28 to December 21, 2025. Every weekend before Christmas, the Small Towns of Character in Maine-et-Loire will light up with free performances, producer markets, and torchlight tours.
