Grand medieval and equestrian festival celebrating the Percheron horse at Château Saint-Jean in Nogent-le-Rotrou
Percheval is a historical and festive celebration organized every Ascension weekend at Château Saint-Jean in Nogent-le-Rotrou. This event celebrates the Percheron horse, an emblematic breed of the Perche region, through equestrian demonstrations, medieval entertainment, historical encampments, participatory workshops, and a medieval banquet. Families, history enthusiasts, and horse lovers gather in the majestic setting of this 11th-century fortress for an immersive journey into the Middle Ages.
Percheval is a unique event that celebrates the Percheron horse, an iconic draft breed born in the hills of Perche, within the magnificent setting of Château Saint-Jean in Nogent-le-Rotrou. Every Ascension weekend, this 11th-century medieval fortress, whose rectangular keep built in the 1040s is one of the oldest of its kind still standing in France, hosts a family festival blending history, equestrian shows, and medieval entertainment.
At the heart of Percheval, the Percheron horse at work is showcased through impressive demonstrations: hitching, logging, plowing, and ancient agricultural tasks, as well as dressage exercises. These presentations recall the fundamental role this powerful and elegant breed played in France's agricultural and military history. Experienced riders and drivers bring to life the age-old gestures that have made the Percheron renowned worldwide.
Percheval is not limited to equestrian shows; it's a true medieval festival that immerses visitors in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. Historical encampments are set up within the castle grounds, featuring artisans, blacksmiths, weavers, and potters perpetuating ancestral skills. Troubadours and minstrels liven up the streets with medieval music, while knightly combats offer striking moments of spectacle. The highlight of the weekend is the medieval banquet on Saturday evening, held under the Abbey of Saint-Denis.
Designed for all audiences, Percheval offers numerous participatory workshops allowing children and adults to try their hand at medieval crafts and games. Coat of arms creation, archery, calligraphy, and weapon handling initiation: each visitor becomes an actor in this timeless day. The event is supported by professional historical reenactment groups and the community of Percheron breeders, proud to share their passion for this exceptional breed.
By choosing Château Saint-Jean as its setting, Percheval combines architectural heritage and living heritage. The castle, which houses the Museum of the History of Perche, provides an authentic and majestic backdrop for this celebration. The event contributes to the influence of the Perche region and the valorization of a world-renowned horse breed, integrating equestrian tradition into a festive and cultural initiative accessible to all.
