The ceramic festival in Puisaye

Every Easter weekend, Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, labeled City of Arts and Crafts and Character City of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, celebrates its ceramic heritage with the Printemps de la Céramique. This event highlights the pottery know-how that has made this Nièvre commune famous for centuries.

An exceptional pottery market

The heart of the event is the pottery market held at the foot of the Renaissance castle of Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye. About forty exhibitors, ranging from established ceramists to young talents, present their creations:

  • Stoneware: The historical specialty of Saint-Amand, from utilitarian pieces to contemporary sculptures
  • Earthenware and porcelain: Decorative pieces and art tableware
  • Contemporary ceramics: Sculptural works and artistic installations
  • Collectible ceramics: Antique and rare pieces from the 18th to the 20th century

Demonstrations and workshops

The Printemps de la Céramique is also a time for knowledge transfer:

  • Throwing demonstrations: Ceramists showcase their mastery of the potter's wheel
  • Decoration and glazing: Brush, slip, and oxide decoration techniques
  • Musical entertainment: Concerts and a festive atmosphere on the market site
  • On-site catering: Food stalls for visitors

Tours and discoveries

The event is an opportunity to discover the ceramic heritage of Saint-Amand:

  • Maison de la Mémoire Potière: Guided tours with throwing demonstrations
  • EMA-CNIFOP: Open days at the training center for ceramic crafts
  • Musée du Grès: Permanent collections at the Château de Saint-Amand

Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, land of potters

Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye is the historical capital of ceramics in Burgundy. Since the 16th century, the clays of Puisaye have been exploited by generations of potters who have made the Saint-Amand stoneware famous throughout France. Even today, many ceramist workshops continue this tradition.
