The biggest medieval festival in Moselle in the small town of character
Rodemack Cité Médiévale en Fête is the largest medieval festival in Moselle, organized every year on the last weekend of June in the fortified village of Rodemack, nicknamed the "Little Carcassonne of Lorraine". Created over 40 years ago by the Association des Amis des Vieilles Pierres, this family event immerses visitors in the Middle Ages with a medieval market, street shows, ancient music, a medieval ball, knight fights, craft workshops, and costumed entertainment in an exceptional heritage setting.
Rodemack, classified among the Petites Cités de Caractère (Small Towns of Character), is a fortified medieval village located on the Luxembourg border, a few kilometers from Thionville. Its ramparts, towers, castle, and cobblestone streets form an exceptional natural backdrop for the largest medieval festival in Moselle. For over 40 years, the Rodemack Cité Médiévale en Fête event has transformed the entire village into a true medieval encampment.
In the heart of the village, a vast medieval market brings together artisans, blacksmiths, potters, weavers, illuminators, and other ancient trades. Visitors can discover ancestral skills, purchase artisanal objects, and taste dishes inspired by medieval cuisine: hypocras, suckling pig, wood-fired bread, and old-fashioned pastries.
The streets and squares of Rodemack come alive with street shows: jugglers, fire-eaters, troubadours, acrobats, and storytellers take over the city. Knight fights in armor, ancient fencing demonstrations, and equestrian jousts offer a striking spectacle. On Saturday evening, a medieval ball invites costumed visitors to dance to the sounds of ancient music.
Participatory workshops allow young and old to try their hand at calligraphy, pottery, archery, or coat of arms creation. Reconstructed camps present daily life in the Middle Ages, with their tents, weapons, and period utensils.
The village of Rodemack offers an exceptional heritage setting for this event. Its 12th-century ramparts, fortified gate, watchtowers, and medieval gardens provide an authentic backdrop that immerses visitors in a truly medieval atmosphere. The festival allows for a lively and fun discovery of this heritage.
Organized by the Association des Amis des Vieilles Pierres pour la sauvegarde de Rodemack (Association of Friends of Old Stones for the preservation of Rodemack), the medieval festival is above all a family event that attracts several thousand visitors each year. Whether costumed or not, participants are invited to share a timeless moment of conviviality, in a spirit of popular celebration and historical discovery.
