Organ and contemporary music festival at Notre-Dame de Royan
Launched in 2023, the Royan-Orgues Festival celebrates the 60th anniversary of the grand Boisseau organ at Notre-Dame de Royan, a historic monument emblematic of the revival of organ building in the 20th century. The festival offers concerts, conferences, and discoveries centered around the organ and contemporary creation, associated every two years with a composition competition.
The Royan-Orgues Festival was created in 2023 by the Association des Amis de l'Orgue de Notre-Dame de Royan (ADOR) in partnership with the ensemble Ars Nova and the music publishers L'octanphare. It is inspired by the Royan International Festival of Contemporary Art (1964-1977) and celebrates the historic organ of Notre-Dame.
The grand Boisseau organ at Notre-Dame de Royan, inaugurated in 1964, is a recently restored historic monument that testifies to the revival of French organ building in the 20th century. Resolutely focused on contemporary creation from its inception, it forms the heart of the festival.
The festival offers concerts, conferences, discussions, public rehearsals, and organ discoveries. Every two years, a composition competition enriches the contemporary repertoire with three categories: organ solo, organ with choir and instrumental ensemble, and educational pieces. The prize-winning works are premiered at the festival.
