The contemporary music festival of the Vendée autumn
Born in 2017 in Fontenay-le-Comte, the Les Nuits Courtes festival quickly established itself as a must-attend event for contemporary music in Western France. Voted "best new festival" at the Festivals Awards in its very first edition, it takes over the Espace Culturel René-Cassin every autumn for three days of eclectic concerts mixing rock, reggae, hip-hop, electro, and punk. Between nationally renowned artists and emerging talents, Les Nuits Courtes celebrates musical diversity in a warm and committed atmosphere.
Created in 2017 by the association Fontenay en Scène, the Les Nuits Courtes festival was born from the desire to create a national-scale event in the heart of the South Vendée. From its very first edition, the challenge was met with flying colors: a quality program with Chinese Man, Tryo, Bigflo & Oli, and Gramatik, and immediate recognition with the "best new festival" award from the Festivals Awards.
The festival sets up its base at the Espace Culturel René-Cassin – La Gare, an emblematic venue in Fontenay-le-Comte converted into a cultural hub. Two stages host the artists: the René-Cassin stage for the headliners and the Chapiteau stage for discoveries and DJ sets. This intimate setup allows for a rare proximity between the audience and the artists, creating a unique atmosphere that festival-goers have praised year after year.
From electro to reggae, from rock to hip-hop, including punk and French chanson, Les Nuits Courtes cultivates a mix of genres with constant rigor. Over the years, the festival has hosted artists as varied as Danakil, Keziah Jones, Dionysos, Orelsan, Wax Tailor, Izia, Pomme, Zaho de Sagazan, Dub Inc, and Suzane. Each edition also features a free opening night, open to all, to democratize access to culture.
Labeled SPEDIDAM network, Les Nuits Courtes places commitment at the heart of its project. The festival adopts an eco-responsible approach with a cashless payment system, partnerships with local breweries and producers, and a food offering including vegetarian options. The festival accepts the Pass Culture and regional schemes like the ePass jeunes, facilitating access for younger audiences to live music. Driven by hundreds of volunteers, the event actively contributes to the cultural and economic dynamism of the Fontenay region.
