Large-format outdoor photography in the salt marshes of L'Île d'Olonne
Every year from June to November, the Festival Photo à Ciel Ouvert transforms the village and salt marshes of L'Île-d'Olonne into an open-air photographic gallery. Organized by the association L'Œil and its 25 volunteers, this free event offers a 1.5 km route dotted with large-format photographs displayed on walls, facades, squares, and paths leading to the marshes. Photographers of national and international renown reveal their vision of nature and living things.
Since 2016, the Festival Photo à Ciel Ouvert has been transforming the charming village of L'Île-d'Olonne into an extraordinary open-air photographic gallery every summer. Driven by the association L'Œil (L'Organisation d'Exposition à l'Île d'Olonne) and its 25 passionate volunteers, this unmissable event for nature photography in Vendée continues to grow with each edition.
The concept is as simple as it is spectacular: nearly 300 large-format photographs are displayed outdoors along a 1,500-meter route that winds freely through the village alleys, squares, gardens, paths, and to the edge of the salt marshes of L'Île-d'Olonne. The prints, in very large format, are hung on stone walls, house facades, fences, and signs along the paths. This open-air scenography offers a unique visiting experience, where photography intimately dialogues with the landscape.
Each edition brings together about thirty photographers of national and international renown, selected for the quality and originality of their work. Wildlife photographers, landscape artists, naturalists, and visual artists all share the same passion for the living world and the beauty of the natural world. Visitors can discover unique perspectives on the landscapes, fauna, flora, and people who shape our Earth.
The highlight of the festival, the Photo Weekend organized in June, allows the public to meet the exhibiting photographers. Conferences, discussions, and guided tours are offered, providing a rare opportunity to interact directly with the artists and understand their creative process.
L'Île-d'Olonne, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the salt marshes, offers a remarkable natural setting for this exhibition. The route traverses preserved landscapes where traditional built heritage blends with ecologically rich wetlands. Visiting the festival is also an invitation to discover this authentic Vendée territory, just a few minutes from Les Sables-d'Olonne.
The 11th edition of the Festival Photo à Ciel Ouvert once again takes over the village and marshes of L'Île-d'Olonne with 230 large-format photographs presented by 23 exhibitors, to be discovered with free access on the outdoor route.
The Festival Photo à Ciel Ouvert returns for its 11th edition from May 30th to November 1st, 2026. This year, 23 photographers are exhibiting 230 large-format photographs along the outdoor route through the town center and marshes of L'Île-d'Olonne.
True to its spirit, the festival offers a free and open visit, accessible every day. The theme and detailed program will be announced in spring 2026 on the website of the association L'Œil.
The route begins in the village center of L'Île-d'Olonne (85340) and extends to the salt marshes. L'Île-d'Olonne is located 10 minutes from Les Sables-d'Olonne via the D36.
The festival is accessible every day, with free and open access, from early June to early November. The photographs are permanently displayed along the outdoor route.
Free admission. Self-guided tour throughout the exhibition period.
