About Vignerons Fiefs Vendéens

Every autumn, the Journée des Vignerons des Fiefs Vendéens invites the general public to discover the five terroirs of this confidential appellation in the Vendée bocage. The 14 estates of the AOC simultaneously open their doors for cellar tours, guided tastings, and direct encounters with the producers. The five terroirs — Brem, Chantonnay, Mareuil, Pissotte, and Vix — each reveal their personality through white wines (Chardonnay, Chenin), rosés (Pinot Noir, Gamay), and reds (Cabernet Franc, Négrette) with pronounced oceanic influences. A friendly and accessible event to rediscover a secret Loire that ventures into the heart of Vendée.

The AOC Fiefs Vendéens: A Loire that ventures into Vendée

The Fiefs Vendéens are one of France's most overlooked, and most endearing, vineyards. This Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), obtained in 2011 after decades of hard work by local winegrowers, covers 337 hectares spread across five distinct terroirs in the heart of the Vendée department. It brings together 14 estates that cultivate Loire Valley grape varietals in climatic conditions deeply marked by Atlantic influence.

The Fiefs Vendéens form a chain of scattered vineyards, each with its own identity, soils, and microclimate. From the southern Vendée bocage to the slopes of the Marais Poitevin, and the schistous hillsides of the Brem sector, these wines carry the geographical and human diversity of a department often reduced to its coastline and seaside tourism. Yet, the vine has been rooted here since at least the Middle Ages, and the monks of Vendée abbeys were among the first to cultivate it.

Five Terroirs, Five Characters

The richness of the Fiefs Vendéens lies in the multiplicity of its five recognized terroirs, each producing wines with distinct expressions:

  • Brem-sur-Mer: Located by the sea, this terroir of schist and sand produces dry, mineral, and lively white wines, and light rosés with salmon hues. It is the most Atlantic terroir of the appellation, influenced by the proximity of the ocean and sea spray.
  • Mareuil-sur-Lay-Dissais: In the heart of the Vendée bocage, this clay-limestone and sandstone terroir yields full-bodied red wines based on Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc, as well as beautiful floral whites. It is the largest vineyard area of the Fiefs Vendéens.
  • Pissotte: Near Fontenay-le-Comte, this small tuffeau and limestone terroir produces ample whites and elegant reds. Chenin expresses its full nobility here.
  • Vix: On the edge of the Marais Poitevin, on alluvial and silty soils, this terroir yields fresh and light wines, perfect for pairing with seafood and local specialties.
  • Chantonnay: In the Haut-Bocage Vendéen, on metamorphic rocks, this terroir produces structured red wines with good aging potential and a beautiful fruit expression.

The Journée des Vignerons: A Friendly Event Open to All

Organized annually in November by the AOC Fiefs Vendéens, the Journée des Vignerons is a unique opportunity to explore the five terroirs of the appellation in a single day and meet the men and women who keep this discreet vineyard alive. The 14 estates simultaneously open their doors from 10 am to 6 pm, welcoming wine lovers, the curious, and professionals in a warm and unpretentious atmosphere.

On the program: cellar tours, guided tastings of different cuvées, walks through the vineyards, and meetings with the winemakers who present their working philosophy, their grape varietal choices, and their cultivation methods. Some estates offer food and wine pairings with local products: Vendée mogettes, Vendée brioche, bocage goat cheeses, artisanal charcuterie.

The day is also an opportunity to discover the autumn landscapes of the Vendée bocage, with vines in flamboyant colors, hedgerows, and white stone villages characteristic of the region. Marked tourist routes allow you to connect the estates by bike or car, via picturesque roads.

Wines with Oceanic Influences

What makes the Fiefs Vendéens unique is their marked Atlantic influence, which gives them a rare freshness and liveliness among Loire Valley vineyards. Atlantic winds moderate temperatures, lengthen seasons, and promote slow, harmonious ripening of the grapes. The whites are often lively and mineral, with citrus and white flower aromas for Chardonnay and Chenin. The rosés are light and fruity, with notes of strawberry and raspberry. The reds, based on Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Négrette, are elegant and finely spiced, with a pleasant freshness on the palate.

These characteristics make Fiefs Vendéens wines particularly well-suited to local gastronomy: oysters from the Vendée coast, clams from the Marais Poitevin, fish from coastal catches, grilled sardines, shad from the river. The reds ideally accompany bocage meats, goat cheeses, and dishes simmered in white wine.

A Vineyard Committed to the Future

Many Fiefs Vendéens winegrowers are engaged in reasoned, organic, or biodynamic viticulture. The preservation of bocage landscapes, the reduction of inputs, the valorization of traditional know-how, and adaptation to climate challenges are at the heart of the concerns of the younger generation of winegrowers taking over family estates. The Journée des Vignerons is also an opportunity to discuss these essential issues for the future of the Vendée vineyard with these passionate men and women.
