Festival of German Cinema in Nantes
Created in 1995 on the initiative of the Franco-German Cultural Centre (CCFA) of Nantes, the Univerciné Allemand festival is dedicated to the discovery of contemporary German cinema. Integrated into the Univerciné cycle upon its launch in 2008, it is held annually in November at the Katorza cinema, in the heart of Nantes. For six days, the festival offers a varied program mixing fiction, documentaries, auteur films, and genre cinema, with the ambition of introducing talented but often unknown German filmmakers to the French public. The selection covers a wide spectrum of German film production, from comedy to horror, from action to art-house cinema. The festival awards a Public Prize and a prize awarded by a jury of students from the University of Nantes. A meeting place for German cinema professionals and French audiences, Univerciné Allemand now attracts around 3,000 spectators per edition, confirming its role as a cultural bridge between France and Germany.
Since 1995, the Univerciné Allemand festival has offered Nantes audiences a privileged window into contemporary German filmmaking. Born from an initiative of the Franco-German Cultural Centre (CCFA) of Nantes, the festival joined the Univerciné cycle in 2008, which brings together four European film festivals (German, British, Eastern European, and Italian) organized throughout the academic year at the Katorza cinema.
The selection at Univerciné Allemand is distinguished by its diversity. The festival strives to present talented but often unknown filmmakers in France, offering a varied panorama of contemporary German production: fiction and documentaries, comedies and dramas, auteur films and genre cinema, animated films, and short films. Each edition highlights strong themes—diversity, inclusion, memory, identity—through works selected for their artistic quality and social relevance.
The festival awards two main prizes:
Beyond the screenings, Univerciné Allemand is a privileged space for exchanges between German cinema professionals and the French public. Meetings with directors, debates, and introductory workshops accompany the program, making the festival a true cultural mediation tool between France and Germany. The festival benefits from the support of the CCFA, Nantes University, the City of Nantes, and numerous institutional and cultural partners.
The 31st edition of the Univerciné Allemand festival will be held in early November 2026 at the Katorza cinema in Nantes. The festival will continue its mission of discovering and promoting contemporary German cinema, with a selection of fiction, documentaries, and auteur films, meetings with filmmakers, and the awarding of the Audience Award and the Univerciné Jury Prize.
