Catalan dance in the heart of the port of Port-Vendres
Port-Vendres, a natural harbor on the Côte Vermeille, hosts sardana dances in its squares and quays every summer. The sardana, the national dance of Catalonia, is a collective circle dance open to all, where men and women hold hands and tap their feet to the rhythm of the music played by the cobla, a traditional Catalan instrumental ensemble.
The sardana evenings in Port-Vendres attract an intergenerational audience, from experienced dancers to curious newcomers eager to discover this age-old tradition. Catalan coblas, such as Cobla Les Casenoves or Cobla Mil·lenària, perform a varied repertoire mixing classical pieces and contemporary compositions.
The sardanes are part of the Festa Catalana de Port-Vendres, a cultural highlight of the summer that celebrates Catalan identity through dance, music, giants (gegants), parades, and local gastronomy. Tastings of Catalan local products, anchovies from Collioure, and wines from Banyuls and Collioure accompany these popular festivities.
The sardana is more than just a dance: it is a symbol of the unity and fraternity of the Catalan people. In Northern Catalonia, and particularly in Port-Vendres, it continues to bring together all generations in a simple and profound gesture, with hands raised to the sky in a circle open to all.
By car: Port-Vendres is located 30 km south of Perpignan via the D914. Parking available at the port and in the town center.
By train: Port-Vendres station served by TER Occitanie from Perpignan.
The sardanes are danced on Place de la République, Quai Forgas, and Nouvelle Place, facing the port.
