The performing arts festival in Vals de Saintonge
Every summer, Sites en Scène is a must-attend event in Charente-Maritime, with approximately thirty venues hosting performances for all audiences. The festival celebrates performing arts in all its forms throughout the Vals de Saintonge region.
The 2025 program features various events: Festival de la Motte en Scène (June 18-21), the Baladins de Taillebourg (July 24-28), a sound and light show with 250 volunteers retracing 100 years of rural life in Saintonge (August 21-24), and a collaborative creation at the Abbaye Royale de Saint-Jean-d'Angély (September 13-14).
The A4 Association (Association Angérienne d'Action Artistique) is an association for the dissemination and mediation of performing arts, developing cultural seasons throughout the Vals de Saintonge region. It presents diverse aesthetics from theater to circus, dance to song, in various formats from 20 minutes to 3 hours.
The Sites en Scène 2026 festival returns to Charente-Maritime from June 19 to September 12, 2026, with around thirty heritage sites hosting theatre, circus, dance, music, and street arts. In Vals de Saintonge, Association A4 organizes the festive closing day on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Abbaye Royale de Saint-Jean-d'Angély.
From June 19 to September 12, 2026, the departmental label Sites en Scène of Charente-Maritime presents a summer season of live performances at around thirty heritage sites in the department: abbeys, castles, churches, beaches. The program combines theatre, circus, dance, music, humor, and street arts, in various formats from 20 minutes to 3 hours, for all audiences.
In Vals de Saintonge, Association A4 (Association Angérienne d'Action Artistique) ensures the coordination and programming of the festival. Based at the Abbaye Royale de Saint-Jean-d'Angély, A4 develops a cultural season throughout the territory and presents a diversity of aesthetics during Sites en Scène: theatre, circus, dance, song.
The flagship event led by A4 takes place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the Abbaye Royale de Saint-Jean-d'Angély. The program includes: an artist residency showcase, the presentation of the 2026-2027 cultural season, a participatory show, and discovery workshops open to the public. Admission to this day is free.
Among the highlights announced across Charente-Maritime: Freemusic Festival in Montendre on June 19-20, Festival de Saintes (classical music) from July 11 to 18, Surgères Brass Festival from July 23 to 25, La Symphonie des Éléments in Les Mathes-La Palmyre on August 8, and Lumières sur l'Atlantique in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer on August 26.
