1,000 years of history relived under the stars in the park of a Burgundy castle
Every Friday and Saturday evening in July and August, over 600 volunteer actors and 50 horsemen bring a thousand years of history back to life in the park of the Château de Saint-Fargeau. Equestrian games, medieval reenactments, the epic of Joan of Arc, the French Revolution, pyrotechnic effects, and immersive sound create an extraordinary human and luminous fresco, considered one of the largest shows of its kind in Europe.
For over forty years, the Son et Lumière du Château de Saint-Fargeau has illuminated the nights of the Burgundy region of Puisaye every summer. With over 600 volunteer actors and 50 horsemen, it is one of the largest open-air historical shows in Europe, attracting nearly 30,000 spectators each season from all over France and abroad.
In 1 hour and 30 minutes of show, ten centuries of history unfold before the stands set up facing the imposing towers of the castle. Immersive sound effects, spectacular light shows, monumental projections, and pyrotechnic finales make each performance an unforgettable moment, set in an exceptional heritage site.
The show retraces the castle's epic journey from its foundation in 980 AD to the Liberation in 1944, through a succession of living tableaux where actors, horsemen, and stunt performers give their all:
In 1979, Michel Guyot bought the Château de Saint-Fargeau, then in a state of abandonment, and conceived a daring project: to finance its restoration through a grand historical show involving the local inhabitants. The first edition of the show took place in 1979-1980, already bringing together several hundred local volunteers. Since then, every summer, hundreds of families from Puisaye and the surrounding villages don period costumes to bring the history of this castle, a listed Historic Monument, back to life.
Today, the Son et Lumière of Saint-Fargeau is much more than a show: it is a social phenomenon, a collective human adventure where the love of heritage and territory is passed down from generation to generation. Some families have been participating since the very beginning, and children of former volunteers now also take to the stage.
The Château de Saint-Fargeau is one of the most beautiful castles in Burgundy. Founded in 980 AD, remodeled in the 15th century by Antoine de Chabannes into its current pentagonal shape with six towers, then embellished in the 17th century by Louis Le Vau for Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans, it stands at the heart of a 120-hectare English park. It is in this park that the giant stage for the show is set up each summer, with the illuminated facades of the castle as a natural backdrop.
The estate also houses steam locomotives, stables, an educational farm, and offers theatrical night tours on Thursday evenings in July-August.
Since 2015, the show has incorporated monumental 3D projections onto the park's ancient trees and the castle's facades, significantly enhancing the visual effects. Over 5,000 costumes have been made over the decades to dress the approximately 600 participants in each performance. The original soundtrack, choreographed light shows, and pyrotechnic finales conclude each evening in a firework of colors.
For the summer of 2026, the Son et Lumière du Château de Saint-Fargeau will be held every Friday and Saturday from July 10 to August 22, 2026. Over 600 volunteer actors and 50 horsemen will once again bring 1,000 years of history to life in the castle park. The park opens at 7 PM, with the show starting at 10:30 PM in July and 10 PM in August. Prices: adult €22, young person (5-18 years) €13, reduced rate €18.
For the summer of 2026, the Son et Lumière du Château de Saint-Fargeau will resume its performances every Friday and Saturday from July 10 to August 22, 2026. In the incomparable setting of the castle park, over 600 volunteer actors and 50 horsemen continue a tradition born over forty years ago to fund the restoration of this architectural treasure of France.
The park opens its doors from 7 PM, allowing spectators to stroll among the costumed actors, visit the stables, discover the exhibition of period military vehicles, and dine before the performance. Access to the stands begins at 9 PM, for a show that starts at 10:30 PM in July and 10 PM in August.
In 1 hour and 30 minutes, the historical fresco takes the audience from the castle's foundation in 980 AD to the Liberation in 1944, through about fifteen striking scenes: Héribert's hunt, the epic of Joan of Arc, the knights' tournament, the arrival of La Grande Mademoiselle, the French Revolution, and the passage of American troops in Puisaye. Spectacular light effects, 3D projections on the park's ancient trees, and a pyrotechnic finale punctuate each evening.
The show is held regardless of the weather — bring warm clothing and a raincoat for the cool Puisaye nights.
The show takes place every Friday and Saturday evening from mid-July to the end of August.
