The largest open-air historical show in France

For over forty years, the Son et Lumière du Château de Saint-Fargeau has illuminated the nights of the Burgundy region of Puisaye every summer. With over 600 volunteer actors and 50 horsemen, it is one of the largest open-air historical shows in Europe, attracting nearly 30,000 spectators each season from all over France and abroad.

In 1 hour and 30 minutes of show, ten centuries of history unfold before the stands set up facing the imposing towers of the castle. Immersive sound effects, spectacular light shows, monumental projections, and pyrotechnic finales make each performance an unforgettable moment, set in an exceptional heritage site.

Ten centuries of history in fifteen scenes

The show retraces the castle's epic journey from its foundation in 980 AD to the Liberation in 1944, through a succession of living tableaux where actors, horsemen, and stunt performers give their all:

  • The foundation of the castle (980): Héribert, Bishop of Auxerre and half-brother of Hugh Capet, erected a first fortified hunting lodge on the promontory overlooking Puisaye.
  • Héribert's hunt: a medieval cavalcade in the park evokes the splendor of feudal nobility.
  • The ghosts of the castle: spectral figures emerge from the ancient walls in a striking play of smoke and light.
  • The epic of Joan of Arc: the Maid of Orléans crosses the stage in an epic scene carried by powerful choirs and galloping horses.
  • Jacques Cœur and Charles VII: the lavish treasurer of the King of France, owner of the castle in the 15th century, parades in great pomp.
  • Antoine de Chabannes and the reconstruction: Joan of Arc's companion rebuilt the castle in its current pentagonal shape flanked by six massive towers.
  • The knights' tournament: jousts, sword fights, and equestrian acrobatics thrill the audience in a scene of medieval chivalry.
  • The arrival of La Grande Mademoiselle: Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans, cousin of Louis XIV, arrived in exile in Saint-Fargeau in 1652 after the Fronde, and commissioned architect Louis Le Vau to transform the interior facades into a masterpiece of French classicism.
  • The bloodthirsty brigands: a scene of nocturnal raids and battles evokes the troubles of the Ancien Régime.
  • The French Revolution: Louis-Michel Lepeletier, a revolutionary deputy and owner of the castle, voted for the death of King Louis XVI before being assassinated—a moving scene carried by hundreds of costumed extras.
  • The passage of American troops in Puisaye (1944): the Liberation comes to life to cheers, with period military vehicles and extras in World War II uniforms.
  • The castle's rebirth: since 1979, Michel Guyot and his family have been working to restore this treasure of French architecture, turning the show into a driver of popular patronage.

A show born from one man's passion

In 1979, Michel Guyot bought the Château de Saint-Fargeau, then in a state of abandonment, and conceived a daring project: to finance its restoration through a grand historical show involving the local inhabitants. The first edition of the show took place in 1979-1980, already bringing together several hundred local volunteers. Since then, every summer, hundreds of families from Puisaye and the surrounding villages don period costumes to bring the history of this castle, a listed Historic Monument, back to life.

Today, the Son et Lumière of Saint-Fargeau is much more than a show: it is a social phenomenon, a collective human adventure where the love of heritage and territory is passed down from generation to generation. Some families have been participating since the very beginning, and children of former volunteers now also take to the stage.

The exceptional setting of the Château de Saint-Fargeau

The Château de Saint-Fargeau is one of the most beautiful castles in Burgundy. Founded in 980 AD, remodeled in the 15th century by Antoine de Chabannes into its current pentagonal shape with six towers, then embellished in the 17th century by Louis Le Vau for Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans, it stands at the heart of a 120-hectare English park. It is in this park that the giant stage for the show is set up each summer, with the illuminated facades of the castle as a natural backdrop.

The estate also houses steam locomotives, stables, an educational farm, and offers theatrical night tours on Thursday evenings in July-August.

Technical production and special effects

Since 2015, the show has incorporated monumental 3D projections onto the park's ancient trees and the castle's facades, significantly enhancing the visual effects. Over 5,000 costumes have been made over the decades to dress the approximately 600 participants in each performance. The original soundtrack, choreographed light shows, and pyrotechnic finales conclude each evening in a firework of colors.
